Description official descriptions

James Cameron's tv series in game form. Dark Angel has you playing as Max Guevera, a 'genetically engineered super-soldier' running around in a post-apocalyptic Seattle, looking to uncover past, family and the evil plans of the "- I - Corporation".

Most of the game involves beat-'em-up style hand-to-hand combat. Max can pull off a variety of flashy moves such as roundhouse kicks and backflipping off walls. The camera also enters the 'bullet time' mode when she does a combo sometimes. Certain levels ask you to assume use of the few stealth skills that Max has to offer.

The game features voiceovers by the actual stars of the show - Jessica Alba and Michael Weatherly.

At least more fun than the series.

The Good
There really isn't much to say about this game on a positive side, except it captures the essence of the series, so if you liked the series (I really can't say I did), you may like this game as well, 'cos voice acting of Max is by Jessica Alba, and her appearance... for however possible for low-budget game... shouldn't cause you too much a problems. This game tries to capture the essence of great hits such as Metal Gear Solid, and certain missions force you to sneak without being detected which can be fun, but hard as well. Basically, this game is for fans of the show, for those who'd like to at least try and pull a few stunts only Max can. Not worth the full price.

The Bad
Well, what can I say, it's hard to tell when the game's budget's gone cut in half so whatever misses this game has might as well be for the lack of finance. On the other hand, good developers can make miracle with nothing but given, so this game does fall down comparing to all the other of its type. Still, with a little more time and support, perhaps it could reach half of the value BloodRayne has, but that's about it. Controls are bearable, but sometimes you can have trouble with camera (what game doesn't, huh?), but it's all in the wrists, so once you learn the moves you can be fine on your own. Although enemy soldiers are well done, every single boss fight is somewhat supernatural experimental creature that ruins all the fun. Fighting a boss with superpowers and stupidly predefined routines simply isn't fun. Levels are versatile enough, but are too similar, and although you go through city streets, tanker, shipyards, secret research labs, and such, they all feel the same, and not much of a mission. Not to mention the briefings, what you hear of Logan is definitely something it could've been left out, at least they'd save some money and perhaps enhance some other part of the game. The game has as little interaction as possible, and to expect to see all the characters from the series is more than a longshot. By the time you reach the end, you'll see Logan, and Cindy, and for like 10 secs each, but that's about it. Not much of a dialogues in the game, either. With cut funds or not, it is a shame that the company wanted to earn on this game by selling it full price from the start, it's unfair towards any player who might've gotten it by that time, or especially towards the fans of the series.

The Bottom Line
Dark Angel features:

  • a continuation to the series
  • similar atmosphere, music, and places as the series
  • voice-overs of same TV show cast (for what it's worth, 'cos it's very little talk in this game if you don't count "mission briefings")
  • quite a nice package of moves and combos Max can perform, in her normal and rage mode
