I suppose Sony must be complemented on producing a driving game that does the Porsche justice, but I began to wish that I could try out the tracks using a Ford Escort rather than a top of the range sports car just to see how demanding the circuits really are. This is a tremendous advert for the cars manufacturers as the Boxster handles the corners so well but this unfortunately slightly reduces the skill aspect of the game. Put it this way, if you found Wipeout a walkover then you should progress through this at ease, but if you struggled to complete Ridge Racer Revolution then this will be right down your street.

Porsche Challenge is certainly no old banger, it's just that instead of the thoroughbred PSX racer we were expecting (and deserve), what we have here is a great looking car with a distinctly average racing engine.

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe made a stunning development debut with Total NBA '97. Looking around for its second in-house development project, it came up with a rather more exclusive, and prestigious, license. Porsche is in the process of launching its first new car for two decades and has decided that the PlayStation is the platform to take the Boxster into the hearts and minds of videogamers the world over. Good choice. Unsurprisingly, car companies are notoriously twitchy about just how their multi-million-pound projects are portrayed, and what should be Porsche Challenge's strongest point seems, at first, to be its Achilles heel. Along with full blueprints, technical specs and the opportunity to drive the real thing, the programmers seem to have received plenty of concrete restrictions. The game therefore falls neatly into the sim section of the racing genre, and is probably too sluggish to really satisfy committed fans of arcade-style examples.

Even with its faults, Porsche Challenge is a darn good racing game. It fully supports Sony's analog controller, which makes driving simply a dream. The lack of multiple cars will deter some gamers, but if you are into realistic driving experiences, this game might just surprise you.

Overall, I think this is a good racing game, but it didn't have that "oomph." Like a car that just can't shift into the high gears in the straight-aways, Porsche Challenge comes up just a little short.

Porsche Challenge is no slouch, but it could use some refinement.

The cars and circuits all look realistic, the only negative aspect aired by many, is that it's a little boring. This is caused by there only being six cars on the large tracks at a time, often giving the impression that you're the only car on the road. It's one of those games missing something vital, which you can't quite put your fingers on. Some extra courses would have been nice, plus some different cars. Ultimately Porsche is a game that plays better than it looks (and it looks good), but there's not enough to keep bringing you back.

Does it handle like a real Porsche and virtually simulate you behind the wheel? As much as any driving game does - which, unfortunately, is not much.

Player Reviews

A licensed game based on Porsche's 'new' (at the time) model

The Good
While being a fan of the Sony PlayStation and liking the console that much, I liked the tracks, but not all of them though, and the only car you use is a Boxster, but the only difference is the colour and the driver. But, I pretty much liked the "interactive" tracks idea, patterns change every lap. While some are confusing to navigate, and others easy, you'd better think twice learning the tracks before that. The graphics are quite good for a PS1 game that aged well in my opinion. On the other hand, sound is the best part. I liked the music as much as the vehicle sounds, so the music is the best part by far.

The Bad
There isn't a map, so the radar which has colour-coded dots is really weird. There's only one car you drive and that's bad. Why not the 911 series? It coulda been a lot better. The controls are the worst part that kills it for me. Pressing the up button on the D-pad honks your horn. So why it's there? Or even L1? It's so confusing what button does.

The Bottom Line
A rather decent PS1 title, but if you want a better racer, you should probably get Need for Speed on the same console.
