If you enjoy exploration, have wide music tastes, and are a sucker for top-quality animation and art, then it is highly suggested that you take a look at Hiveswap.

To sum it up in one giant package, Hiveswap Episode 1 is just what you want out of a first episode of the series. It’s written well, animates beautifully, the characters have personality in spades, and the game has some great music to accompany what is already a first chapter that makes you want to keep playing even after the game is over. It only left me hungry for more, and I am eagerly awaiting the next chapter from What Pumpkin; there is nothing that I am anticipating more.

Hiveswap is oozing with teenaged charm, from Joey’s obsession with Clarissa Explains It All to her gloriously sparkly Lisa Frank posters. It’s a surreal world where monsters can pop out of nowhere and a mysterious portal in the attic can send you shooting through space to an alien planet without any warning. The combat system is baffling but entertaining — in one battle, I think I actually killed something with paprika — and I’m interested in learning more about Joey and the adventure she’s found herself on.

Polygon (8 out of 10) (80%)

Hiveswap: Act One is brief, but I already have a lot of hope for the world and cast introduced here. (And the music. Oh god, yes, the music.) There’s a lot to see, and anyone looking for a light-hearted adventure will have a great time. Despite its minor bugs and short length, both Homestuck devotees and those who never experienced the webcomic will find a fantastic, humorous introduction to this new pocket of an already-massive universe.

Solid and definitely has an audience. There could be some hard-to-ignore faults, but the experience is fun.

Ultimately, Hiveswap is a let-down for fans of point-and-click adventure games, but much more so for fans of Homestuck, especially for those that contributed the millions that went towards its making. Some will just be happy with another addition in their beloved universe, but Hussie's newest creation is not just a far cry from its initial promise – it's also not enjoyable.

Adventure Gamers N/A

The beautiful Hiveswap series debut gets off to a solid start, trading a bit of gameplay challenge for ambitious world-building and story setup for future episodes to expand upon.
