Doki Doki Literature Club is a daring game that sets itself up to be something ordinary to intentionally subvert a player's expectations. Even knowing this, the narrative is solid and engaging enough that I'd recommend anyone that can endure a cute dating sim for a couple of hours to try this game out.

Doki Doki Literature Club! è eccezionale nel suo trasformarsi più volte mantenendo sempre un'incredibile coerenza di fondo. Team Salvato è riuscito a creare una storia appassionante e dalla natura fortemente metavideoludica, sfruttando con immensa intelligenza la forma visual novel in tutte le sue componenti (addirittura l'interfaccia diventa parte del racconto). Il risultato è disturbante, maturo e fuori dagli schemi tipici dei videogiochi, ma allo stesso tempo è accattivante e riuscito proprio perché si tratta di un racconto che non poteva essere fatto in nessun altro modo. Insomma, c'è più sapienza narrativa in Doki Doki Literature Club! che in molte produzioni miliardarie pacchiane e prive di ispirazione, con decine di sceneggiatori. Inoltre è completamente gratuito, quindi non avete davvero alcuna scusa per snobbarlo.

While someone who does not like the genres Doki Doki Literature Club is set in may enjoy the game, it seems like it would appeal more to those who can recognize the staples of those genres so that it can help set the proper stage for what this game does differently. The visual novel name is no misnomer as your interaction is usually limited to reading a story rather than playing a game, but it is a fine story that manages to leave an emotional impact, tell a unique tale, and linger in your memory for good or for ill depending on how you react to it. The premise might turn off quite a few people, but on some level, everything has to be taken at face value when you consider playing Doki Doki Literature Club. It is Psychological Horror, it is Anime, it is Horror, it is a Visual Novel, and while it manages to mix those things together into something excellent, you’re not likely to enjoy the whole if certain parts of it would put you off on their own.

Doki Doki Literature Club is a mind boggling and hard hitting horror game that takes tried and tested formulas of both visual novels and dating sims and turns them on their heads. The themes and story pack a punch, and stayed with me long after I had finished playing. It may require commitment from some to get through but the reward for those who stick it is more than worth it.

Anyway, there’s a sort of anime dating sim JRPG kind of horror thing on Steam with the unlikely name Doki Doki Literature Club. It’s probably about three hours long. The first hour or so are intentionally insufferable. Some of the best horror takes its time establishing what’s normal, because it has to show you what it’s going to break. Without normal, you wouldn’t know what’s weird. Without real, you wouldn’t know what’s surreal. Without victims, you wouldn’t know what’s monstrous. Without the anime dating sim, you wouldn’t know Doki Doki Literature Club.

Way Too Many Games (7.5 out of 10)

I have to say that I was actually pleasantly surprised by Doki Doki Literature Club. I wasn’t expecting to enjoy it, especially with how excruciatingly dull it is in the beginning. It uses purposeful glitches at times that I found refreshingly inventive and twists that I definitely didn’t see coming. It’s a bizarre journey that delivered the disturbing experience it warns you about in the opening screen. If you like sick and twisted things, then you should check this game out.

Once Doki Doki has gotten to its grand finale, you're left staring at a static screen with one character staring you in the eye for literally an hour and a half. The first hour is meant to be similarly trying, with its dopey dialogue and bright colors. It's only after the game's twists start playing out that you realize all the dialogue has two or even three meanings, and glitches wreak havoc, pointing out differences in characters' behavior or intentions. Finally, a clear amount of deception is woven into the game; before you even click start, it warns you repeatedly that it's "not suitable for children or those who are easily disturbed." You may think it's a joke, but those are probably the most sincere words in the game. While the concept behind Doki Doki is interesting, unfortunately its execution (six hours of clicking) isn't as engaging. And the bait-and-switch storyline has caught many players by unpleasant surprise.

Insanely clever, frequently annoying, haunting as Hell. Doki Doki Literature Club! is like no game we’ve played before. It is not for the faint of heart, nor the easily upset. It is every bit as triggering as you’ve heard, if not more, and must be experienced to be believed. If you can sit through the impending doom that comes along with it though, it’s about one of the best psychological horror games on the market – and it’s available for free!
