Way Too Many Games (9.5 out of 10)

A few final thoughts: Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus really amps up the challenge. Even on the lower difficulties, the sheer quantity of armored Nazis will prove to be a roadblock for many. However, the challenge is never unfair. There is a huge difficulty spike for the end game mission that feels exponentially more difficult than the previous stages. But none of that matters when the combat music kicks in. I dare you to resist the compulsive urge to rush Nazis with a dual shotguns and a hatchet spree when Mick Gordon’s combat theme starts in the background. I certainly couldn’t.

Hooked Gamers (9.5 out of 10)

By changing things just enough from a gameplay perspective, changing the locales and daring to take the story down an even darker path, Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus has kept the fun while also making the player feel the emotion of BJ's battles, his pain and rage, even his heartbreak. Unless you have an unwavering core, this game will take you on one hell of a rollercoaster ride of emotions, guns blazing all the way.

Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus is a fantastic single-player shooter, but what really got me invested was the brilliantly written characters and the performances of its cast. BJ and his crew are full of spirit and personality, and General Engel is as memorable a nemesis as you’re likely to find in games. Machine Games has once again turned the well-worn act of mowing down Nazis into something to get excited about.

With a fun, heart pumping campaign that will last around 10-15 hours to finish, assuming you take the time to explore environments for goodies and do the extra missions, The New Colossus will have you going back, hunting down Nazi over and over again.

Geeks Under Grace (8.5 out of 10)

Wolfenstein's follow up is a wild ride through alternate history with a healthy dose of gore and absurdity. It has some of the strongest character development and storytelling of any first person shooter in history and, though the gameplay can prove difficult, the feel of combat is fantastic. When you mix in a great soundtrack, top notch visual design, and excellent voice work, you're in for a treat.

Games TM (8 out of 10)

It's violent and unrelenting, a gorgeous and evocative shooter that captures the spirit of the earliest days of the FPS, while still finding room for growth in its story and characters. It's as fun to kill Nazis today as it was in 1992 back with the launch of Wolfenstein 3D, the only difference is that the guns we use to do the killing are a little bigger now, and the graphical fidelity has evolved to the point where we can see the grin plastered all over B.J. Blazkowicz's face.

With a more coherent tone, a broader variety of enemies and all the excellent Easter Eggs you could hope for (No German Beetles this time, but there is something better hidden away) this is the best first-person shooter we have seen in months. Whether you’re looking for a grindhouse game with a little depth or simply an excuse to shoot Nazis, definitely grab this one at the earliest opportunity.

Gameluster N/A

Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus is as much a story as it is a shooter, and although the end leaves something to be desired, experiencing the story is more than satisfying. It’s a journey that makes you think about the meaning of freedom and happiness, all while tackling some social issues that are a little too relevant today.

Rock, Paper, Shotgun N/A

Earlier, I said Wolfenstein 2 is a hair's breadth away from being one of my favourite singleplayer action games of all time. The hair seems to have become much thicker as I think back, but the truth is that if there were even a handful of first-person shooters this strange and spectacular released in any given year, I'd barely find time to play anything else. In a week that has seen speculation about the future of this type of big budget singleplayer game, for all its flaws, this is a reminder of how powerful and vital they can be.
