In A Goblin's Xmas Tale the Giant Goblin shoots down Santa by accident assuming that he is a goose he could eat for dinner. Santa then explains that the naughty and nice list together with the bag of presents has been stolen by the evil Valdeze. It is now up to the Goblin to save Xmas, but faith will have it that the goblin does not care. Until he learns Santa is willing to do (or pay) anything that is.

The game has three modes of play. The first mode has side viewed stages where the player must clear the screen of Valdezes candy ghost monsters by shooting them either with the machine gun or blaster provided by Santa. The second mode is a top-down viewed stage series where the goblin flies on Rudolph in an arcade shooter like fashion. This mode also ends up with a big war ship battle. The third and last play mode is top-down inside the candy factory where the goblin is constrained to the vertical axis in the sides of the screen and must move left to right and back by using portals as the center of the screen is filled with candy ghosts and hot melting caramel.

There is five worlds which all ends with a boss fight. Apart from that there is also an arena mode where players can battle each other locally, and survival where the goal is to survive for as long as possible.
