Commodore 64Zzap! (Feb, 1989)
Great fun for one player but even better for two, this is one of those straightforward, dead-easy-to-play flight games that you just can't afford to miss - no siree, not for £2.99 anyway.
Commodore 64The Games Machine (UK) (Oct, 1987)
An excellent two-player head to head combat game - very fast, very playable, and more often than not, very tense.
Commodore 64Zzap! (Oct, 1987)
A disappointment after Ace, but still enjoyable for budding combat pilots.
Commodore 64Info (Nov, 1988)
The game's object is quite simple, kill or be killed. If there is any weakness with ACE 2 it is its documentation, which is nothing more than a terse command summary.
Commodore 64Your Commodore (Nov, 1987)
The action is fast and frantic as daring manoeuvres must be carried out at top speeds. ACE 2 is a worthy successor to ACE and is certainly set to become a high flier.
Commodore 64Computer and Video Games (CVG) (Oct, 1987)
The fiddly controls are kept to a bare minimum and when you hit the fire button the action starts. Ace graphics and ace sound ensure Ace 2 is a worthy successor to Ace.

I am not saying Ace 2 is too easy, the combat is really hard, but a five year old could fly the thing. Nonetheless it does give you a chance to match yourself against a human opponent and on that basis alone it is in a class of its own.
Commodore 16, Plus/4ASM (Aktueller Software Markt) (Oct, 1987)
Commodore 64Commodore Force (Apr, 1993)
Sequel to one of the first ever combative flight sims, ACE 2 radically simplifies the action of the original to incorporate a simultaneous two-player mode. A great idea in theory but the more basic flying makes it less fulfilling to play than the original, and the head-to-head is inferior to Ocean's Top Gun.
ACE 2 tries to combine the traditional flight simulator with a fair slice of action - but with the emphasis heavily on the action side. If you like your flight sims to have loads of details like rudder control, undercarriage control, flaps control and so on then you could well be disappointed. Unfortunately the action still doesn't live up to expectations - a limited cockpit view and only two (at most) opponents at any one time dampens the thrills you'd expect from a shoot-em up and fails to compensate for the absence of control options you'd get from a simulator.
The gameplay hasn't improved any and the graphics are worse making ACE 2 a very avoidable game on the Spectrum. Again the lack of opponents and the limited cockpit view fail to compensate for the lack of realistic controls.
Amstrad CPCCPC Game Reviews (Jun 13, 2021)
If you have tried Top Gun on the CPC then you will find that ACE 2 is a very similar experience. This is by no means a full-blown flight simulator. It isn’t the type of game where you will need to wade through the instructions; one-on-one dogfighting is the order of the day. Where the game differs from Top Gun is that the screen is split horizontally rather than vertically. There’s more colour on display with ACE 2 but the graphics are quite basic and Top Gun was a bit faster to my eye. The sound effects are very basic, while the controls are streamlined to match the simple gameplay. Add a human opponent and the game is more fun.
Commodore 64Commodore Format (Jul, 1991)
The clinching criticism is a lack of depth and variety: endlessly shooting down planes soon becomes tedious.
ZX SpectrumYour Sinclair (Feb, 1988)
Whilst reviewing this game I couldn't help thinking that the programmers have gone a little too far in simplifying things. The flight controls are just up, down, left and right, and the plane seems to respond very strangely to some commands. Add to this the featureless cockpit view and a few rough edges here and there, ACE II begins to look somewhat primitive - neanderthal I'd say! It's more of an arcade game than a simulator - and a pretty duff one at that! On the whole a bit of a let down - if you're into this sort of thing stick with ACE I.
Commodore 64Power Play (Jan, 1988)
