Sound hard? It is. And it only gets harder from there. In some platformers, there’s occasional easy bits/downtime. There’s none of that in Alien Soldier. By far one of the most intense, imaginative, and overall tight platformers ever.

Even when compared to Treasure's own Gunstar Heroes, Alien Soldier still holds its own. If you're looking for a side scrolling shoot 'em up full of non-stop boss encounters, then look no further. It's not in the same league as Gunstar Heroes (in my opinion of course), but that doesn't change the fact that it's an enjoyable shooting game in its own right.
GenesisDefunct Games (Jun 08, 2012)
Alien Soldier is short on words, but has enough action to make it a must-play. It's not an easy game, especially when you realize that you're expected to fight through all 25 bosses in one life. But it's ultimately worth the trouble, which is not something you can say about all 16-bit action games. Don't be fooled by the generic title, Alien Soldier is one of the best games of the 1990s.
GenesisRetrogaming History (Feb 25, 2010)

It’s a shame, really. Alien Soldier deserves so much more recognition than it got upon its initial release, and it will never enjoy the same level of popularity as Gunstar Hero. But with this game added to the Virtual Console, gamers get to experience an awesome older game that they’ve probably never played. That said, this isn’t a game for the impatient; the insanely high difficulty level will result in countless deaths and Continues, if not the occasional broken controller. This game features some of the most grueling, badass boss fights ever seen in any game, and presents it in a seemingly never-ending gauntlet of challenges. Wii owners, stop searching through all the junk in the Virtual Console’s library and give Alien Soldier a shot. It certainly deserves one.
Genesis16bit (2004)
Originale, adrenalinico, esaltante e curato all'estremo.

How Epilson came to be may be a convoluted, overly-complex mess, but he and his adventures are not. You want something new to sink your teeth into? You want to hone those split-second reflexes in what may be the king of 2D shooters? You need look no further, my friends, salvation is at hand.
Alien Soldier is absolutely recommended for run-n-gun fans. The game is import friendly as well, as almost all the text is in English. A word of warning - you will need a converter to run Alien Soldier on a Genesis system no matter which version you have, as it does contain Sega's territorial lockout program. Alien Soldier is definitely one of the more sought-after MD games... I've seen copies on eBay (both versions) go for some ridiculously high prices... not quite as high as I've seen Radiant Silvergun go, but fairly close to it. Still, if you can afford it, it's definitely recommended. Of course, the ROM is available for download online as well, which is definitely a lower-cost alternative then buying the game outright.

Treasure's releases for the Mega Drive have been, almost without exception, incredible. Gunstar Heroes, Treasure's first game as Treasure, is considered by many to be the epitome of run-n-gun games, surpassing even the mighty Contra. Dynamite Headdy is a fantastic platformer, with a lot more depth and playability than most similar games released for the MD. Light Crusader was an interesting isometric-perspective RPG that was similar to Landstalker. There were a few other Treasure-created MD games too, but those in particular were a few of the standouts.
GenesisConsoles Plus (Apr, 1995)
GenesisMean Machines (Jul, 1995)
A modern classic that turns the concept of platform blasting inside-out, but that suffers from being a bit samey.
GenesisVideo Games (Apr, 1995)
Oooh! Aaah!

Assuming you've already anticipated the "it's really hectic and difficult if you're not into this sort of thing" disclaimer, Alien Soldier is rather great, actually, and I feel like a proper spoon for overlooking it last week. Spoony me.
WiiNintendo Life (Nov 03, 2007)
The graphics, and in particular the animation, are some of the best you will see on the Megadrive. All the characters are rich in detail and some of the bosses are huge. The music is excellent and there are speech effects thrown in from time to time as well. The on-screen action is sometimes hectic and yet there isn't even the slightest trace of slowdown. The action is fast and furious, so if that sounds like your bag then this could be the game for you. Given the similarities to Treasure’s own Gunstar Heroes, however, Alien Soldier sort of falls short, mainly because the platforming elements are not as good. It is also frustratingly difficult at times as well, which may put off some gamers. Still, this is an enjoyable run n’ gun game in its own right and well worth a look for fans of the genre.
WiiIGN (Nov 26, 2007)
If you've already downloaded Gunstar and played it to death, put down the nine bucks to keep the action going with Alien Soldier. But if you still haven't commanded the Heroes in battle, put Solider on hold, try Gunstar first, and then come back here afterward to see if your brain is still intact enough to be able to handle yet more Treasure-brand madness.
WiiGameSpot (Nov 12, 2007)
The only real problem with Alien Soldier is that it takes time to click. You have to learn the controls, figure out what the weapons do, learn the patterns of the bosses, and figure out how to keep your ammo stocked. But once you learn how to make your way, things really do click and you start totally feeling what it must be like to be an army of one trading firepower with some of the universe's largest, most elaborate creatures. That's a great feeling.
GenesisPlay Time (May, 1995)
