The Amazing Spider-Man is a third-person action game based on the movie of the same name. In contrast to the other versions which tell an epilogue, this game loosely follows the movie's storyline. However, the game skips over the origin story; the player directly starts as Spider-Man with the eventual goal to stop Lizard from infecting people with his virus.

In comparison to Spider-Man: Total Mayhem, this game introduces a open world New York City to explore. Spider-Man slings through the city - although there is no automatic aiming involved - while searching for side missions and collecting spider tokens, the game's currency. Of course he can also make his way to the next plot mission. The majority of these missions involve fighting - the usual combination of rapidly hitting enemies and dodging their attacks - but there are also some other elements like chases or challenges, e.g. continuous slinging for a certain amount of time.

Solved missions reward experience points which are in turn reinvested into upgrades: there are five upgrade trees (combat; strength and speed; web shooting; body and bonuses) to choose from. In the shop, the player can use collected tokens or real money to buy boosts which stay active for a certain amount of time.
