Overall, however, American McGee's Alice is one of the more unique, immersing and gratifying PC games on the market. Keep in mind the recommended age requirement is 17 and over, and don't blame me if you experience some nightmares after playing this game. American McGee's Alice action/adventure game is a strange, intoxicating twist on Lewis Carroll's trilogy, for mature teens.
WindowsJust Adventure (Jul 23, 2011)
This is a game which can be enjoyed by any adventure gamer. The story is compelling. The atmosphere is moving. It is everything you want in a game. Even if you absolutely cannot handle the dexterity required of a First Person Shooter, there are cheat codes available to make you invulnerable and able to move anywhere. The game will still keep you enthralled. Without question, this game deserves an “A”.
WindowsGameGenie (2001)
Please go get American McGee's Alice right now. With some of the best levels, graphics, music, and sounds in any game, we can overlook the lack of multiplayer and somewhat repetitive and difficult combat system. You will seriously want to keep playing to check out the next level. A very engaging Wonderland makes American McGee's Alice one of the best games on the et. Don't let the Queen of Hearts's reign of terror last any longer.
WindowsElectric Games (Feb 02, 2001)
All in all, Alice is an excellent game. Sure we've seen similar gameplay, but it's never been as detailed as this. Wonderland is familiar to everyone, and this dark, surreal version is moody and a lot of fun to explore. Top-notch graphics, sound, and voice acting are icing on the cake. I highly recommend this game to 3D fans that are looking for a bit more than the typical shooter. Bottom Line: Excellent graphics and sound. Controls are responsive and the save/load feature is wonderfully implemented. Puzzles and arcade areas are fun rather than nerve-wracking. The environment is absolutely brilliant, you never know what's around the next corner. Alice is a total blast.

American McGee's Alice is a spectacular game, one that you should definitely take a look at, even just to download a demo, it is definitely worth the effort and you will be impressed like I am, but remember this game is definitely not for children.

WindowsGamer's Pulse (Dec 14, 2000)
I love this game. I’ve had dreams since playing this game of the worlds I visited in Alice. Playing Alice is like playing in the mind of a lunatic and a genius: I wonder American McGee is like? If you have any appreciation for surrealism, creative thinking, fantasy, or the twisted or unusual, Alice is a game you should devour in large, delirious doses. The worlds are incomparably deeper and more original than any other game I’ve ever played; however, if you’re looking for an action game where the challenge comes from enemy tactics and not from the world itself, just stay home - or better yet, give Alice a try. Alice is much like an independent film. I don’t know how it will do with the gaming mainstream, but just because it’s not targeted towards the happy majority, doesn’t mean it’s not a game of the highest quality. I will keep Alice for as long as my feeble mind can handle it..
WindowsIGN (Dec 05, 2000)
I feel sorry for texture artists. Actually, not all texture artists, just Alice's texture artists, mainly. I don't know what kind of slavedriver American McGee is, but he must be some kind of inhuman monster to have worked them so hard. While we're at it, how about the other level designers, or character designers... hell, the whole staff at Rogue. Alice raises the bar for level design and graphics so high that smaller development houses are just going to sigh resolutely to themselves and whisper "well at least we've got bigger aliens in our game." In a year full of almost-but-not-quite trendsetters (we're not including you, Sacrifice), Alice manages to deliver a near-constant stream of wows, something I can't remember experiencing in a long, long time. While Alice isn't a perfect experience, it's just the thing to end 2000 with a proper PC bang.
WindowsGameSpy (Dec 19, 2000)
Visually and conceptually, Alice is unparalleled among this year's games, and succeeds in eclipsing its own weaknesses with intoxicating style. A defiantly original example of game-development as a fine art.
WindowsGame Informer Magazine (Feb, 2001)
For all you people who want to immerse yourselves in the most jacked-up, bizarre, unthinkably twisted environments of all-time, I highly recommend you buy Alice. Then I recommend that you play it in a dark room at high volumes for a lengthy amount of time. When you come out you will do one of two things – have a psychotic break you’ll never return from, or sleep for 16 hours straight. This is by FAR the most whacked, insane, mind-wringing game I have ever seen. You think Alice is this nice little girl with blond hair and good manners, but it turns out she’s a knife-wielding harbinger of ultra-violence, the likes of which even Hannibal Lector has never seen. This title is creative on a level that would disturb an LSD addict, if that sheds any light on it for you. When you start playing Alice you can say ‘bye bye’ to reality and 'hello' to insanity, because what you’re about to see is going to knock you right on your ass.

WindowsGame Over Online (Dec 15, 2000)
The worst part of American McGee's Alice is knowing it is eventually going to end. Throughout the entire game, I felt so captivated and a part of this twisted world and I had a hard time quitting the game. Despite my personal love of the game, Alice isn't for everyone. A lot of people might be put off by this disturbing view of Wonderland, or just never cared for Wonderland in the first place. Unfortunately, Alice brings nothing innovative to 3rd person gaming, but relies on artistic talent instead. If you find yourself intrigued by Wonderland, I would defiantly suggest giving Alice a try, one of the best games this year.
WindowsGame Informer Magazine (Feb, 2001)
I think what truly impressed me was how well this dark Wonderland works as a game setting. The game literally plays like a dream. Plot turns and the tasks set before you frequently seem almost arbitrary and nonsensical to the conscious mind, but on a deeper, murkier level, they make their own kind of sense. Jungian claptrap aside, I highly recommend posting a clock next to your computer when you start this game up. The hours seriously fly by like you wouldn't believe.

The only other drawback is the lack of a multiplayer feature, which is unfortunate considering all of the unique weapons and the wide variety of characters that one could choose from. In addition, the mod community would go bonkers with level designs for this game. Oh well, let's hope it's included in the sequel. Neither of these hits is major enough to detract from what I would consider one of the best games of 2000. If you're looking for a completely different visual experience in a fun action/ adventure game then I can't think of a better choice than American McGee's Alice.
WindowsActionTrip (Dec 13, 2000)
No doubt you've read all about this in some review on the net already, and you're probably aware that this is one of THE prettiest games around, so I really won't bore you too much with the details. Yeah, it's freaking beautiful: the animations, the rich models, colorful settings, exceptional physics, and smooth frame rates. If we take Rune as a glowing example of what can be done with the Unreal engine, than Alice definitely becomes a reference of what can be achieved when Quake III code gets manhandled the right way.

American McGee started a few years ago with the idea of making a game based on Lewis Caroll's Alice, and the guys of Electronic Arts (RJ Berg especially) found it to be a great idea and they started the production.
WindowsGamezilla (May 01, 2001)
Alice is a game designed for the mature gamer. Not only because of its violent action but because most younger gamers won’t know the story of Alice and her two previous adventures into Wonderland, thus not appreciating the change unto which all the inhabitants of Wonderland have gone. Additionally, with its themes of a psychiatric nature, many younger players might not understand the relation of Wonderland and Alice’s psyche. But for the rest of us, it is an excellent game with plenty of character and story development, engaging plot and rich graphics. This game will undoubtedly appeal to the gamer of a more disturbed taste. I liked it.

WindowsPC Games (Germany) (Dec, 2000)

Alice in Wonderland. I've watched the movie a million times, played the game almost twice, and I still haven't managed to read the book. That's the way it goes in the U.S.; I guess I'm just an illiterate commie-stomper. This new game comes stamped with the developer's name on it. The last game I remember that put the developer's name on the box left me quivering. We had an exceedingly brief in-office meeting, when Bob suggested I review it. Unanimously taking Jakub's silence to be his sign of acceptance in this duty, the review fell to him. Brave soul. This time around, that is not the case. American McGee's Alice is first and foremost one of the best looking games around. The sound is top notch, the levels are awesome, even the menu screen kicks some massive bootay. What could possibly go wrong?

WindowsPC Player (Germany) (Dec, 2000)
WindowsJust Games Retro (Jul 31, 2011)
You can argue that taking Alice out of playful nonsense and into nightmare horror is unimaginative and obvious, but it undeniably works here. Many of the sights and scenes still hold up today (though admittedly, seeing many before elsewhere, such as Clive Barker’s Undying, lessened the impact). This is not a game designed or meant to offer a serious gaming challenge, and some engine issues keep it from being a spot-on example of good platforming, but this Wonderland has plenty to show you if you’re willing to go along for the ride.
80 (UK) (Jan 16, 2001)
All in all, Alice is something of an odd game. If you ignore the setting and graphics, there is a good but not outstanding action platformer underneath. However, with the polish and sheer excellence of the atmosphere generated, Alice becomes much greater than that. If you let the game draw you in, the fantasy world becomes much more real than you could imagine -and the game much more compelling. Alice is well worth a look, even if you feel that the original is best left unaltered.
MacintoshMac Addict (Nov, 2001)
American McGee's Alice is way creepier than the original, and the spooky music by Nine Inch Nails' Chris Vrenna only adds to the intensely real trip down insanity lane. The most extreme (and jaded) hard-core shooter fans will find Alice tilted a little too much toward form over function, but everyone else (and that's most of us) will, quite literally, go crazy for it.
MacintoshTap-Repeatedly/Four Fat Chicks (Jan, 2002)
American McGee's Alice is a fine game but not an outstanding product when appraised in overall terms, and particularly from an adventure gamer's vantage point. The graphics, aurals, levels and characters all enhance the likelihood of your visit to Wonderland being entertaining—for a while. However, with McGee's willingness to be generic with gameplay and story, we are ultimately let down by excessive and pointless jumping, poor combat, and a rather empty, noninteractive narrative. It's a very pretty and novel game but also flawed, I'm afraid. My "thumb-up" rating is due largely to the graphics, acting, and level design. If you approach it with that expectancy, you may well be pleased.
WindowsAll Game Guide (2000)
Ultimately, American McGee's Alice leaves good impressions, even with some minor negatives: difficulty in hoisting Alice onto ledges from a hanging position, occasional unresponsiveness as far as the jumping is concerned, fluctuating difficulty in some places, and one ultra-irritating jumping puzzle. However, these concerns are so minor when compared to the splendor of the game's universe, you will gladly overlook them in order to see what bizarre setting lies beyond the next portal. It's safe to say that the adventure is a must buy and will most certainly be a contender for game of the year honors.
MacintoshMacNN (Jul 26, 2001)
Technical issues aside, Alice stands on its own merits as a fantastical adventure into a beloved childhood story-turned-nightmare by level designer American McGee, best known for his work with id Software on Doom II and the Quake series. Although the delivery is skewed by uninteresting combat encounters and unique but unsatisfying weapons, the game has undeniable appeal for its mind-boggling environments, wacky characters, and a story befitting of the Lewis Carroll classic. Those looking for an excursion from the norm won't find a better choice than American McGee's Alice.
WindowsGameplanet (Jan 23, 2001)
Combines a rather dark storyline with some excellent voice acting and graphics to create an entertaining story. American McGee's Alice is definitely worth a look.

So file this under games that should have been more. I wanted to absolutely love this Wonderland trip, but it's hard when Alice's gameplay just isn't nearly as deep as Alice's psychosis. When all is said and done, American McGee's Alice is all ideas and eye candy - delicious, cyanide-laced eye candy, embedded with LSD-tipped sewing needles.
MacintoshMac Gamer (Nov 29, 2001)
American McGee's Alice is one of the most original games I've reviewed. I thoroughly enjoyed it, but I must warn that it is not a game for everyone. It has a mature ESRB rating, but more than the rating, I believe that most children will not enjoy or get Alice because they do not have the appropriate societal baggage to see the details and creative work involved in the game. Hardcore action gamers might be disappointed by Alice's less frenetic gameplay as compared to other first person shooters. And, experienced puzzle gamers will find Alice a quick walk through.
WindowsChrist Centered Game Reviews (Jun 01, 2005)
From a Christian perspective, I am not too fond of he game. There is violence and gore. (What do you expect weilding a butcher's knife?) This game is a little too weird for my tastes and there is some swearing. (Da*nit) There's a jack in the box that pops out demons. The game is easy to install. The graphics are great. It uses the Quake 3 engine so I am not too surprised. There is no multiplayer. The music adds to the eerie feel of the game. One thing that disappointed me is the sound support. The game supports EAX and A3D but my laptop's cheap ESS card was scratchy. But on my SB live at home, the sound was great.
"How Do You Know I'm Mad?" "You must be, or you wouldn't have come here," replies the Cheshire Cat to Alice's query. One of the most interesting and intriguing efforts of the last two years to bridge the gap between action and adventure gaming is now available at "bargain bin" prices (for the PC version) in most stores. While playing Alice, I thought of several rather disparate titles: Sanitarium, Rayman 2, MDK2, and even The Longest Journey. How did this strange game develop?

Alice is exquisitely atmospheric and dripping with thoughtful design considerations. Rogue deserves high marks for the obvious care that went into developing the story and the world with which the player interacts. Everything about Alice attempts to build the atmosphere in which the game lives. Even the packaging of the game opens to not only reveal the CD case containing the game, but a "Psychological Casebook" used to record Alice's progress while she has been a guest at the mental institution. This book is worth a read, as it not only tangibly sets up the arena for the game, it reveals several hints for the successful completion of the game.

Alice thought very carefully, as her teacher had instructed, before she replied. "I rather like it, I must say. Although, my sister Edith may have liked it more. 'Tis a pity she is not me. I especially love the new scenery, your bucket of paint…I mean blood, worked much better than I would have guessed. I would have liked a bit more story to the game, and a bit less of killing things, and quite a lot less jumping, thank you."

Lewis Carroll. Comment dire ? Adapté.

A young girl loses her family in a fire and ends up in an insane asylum, where she is hailed as Wonderland's savior. Clutching her stuffed bunny, Alice enters the world of Wonderland in her mind. While Lewis Carroll's Through the Looking Glass and Alice in Wonderland were certainly not lighthearted tales, American McGee's Alice brings the creepy world of Wonderland to your computer with violence, madness and gore.

But if what you want is a game that looks and feels like nothing else out there, one that will leave your head spinning and your appetite for clever challenges sated, you couldn’t do better than ALICE. In a world of look-alike 3D games, McGee has done what it takes to stand out. It’s more than enough to make you forgive him the occasional misstep or bit of artistic pretension.
WindowsAdrenaline Vault, The (AVault) (Feb 13, 2001)
3D shooters seem to mirror the gamer’s state of mind. For instance, the first generation beau ideal was drenched in hormonal glee. Aliens were punished for being, well, aliens, and it was the grizzled man-hero, drawing on his super-human strength, who brought justice to the world. Somewhere along the line, we became bored with this bombastic fable and started demanding “something different.” Although we were not quite sure what that would be, a veteran first-person designer named American McGee had the inspiration and the means to pull it off. In Electronic Arts' Alice, which bears his name but is also the product of the under-praised talents at Rogue Entertainment, there is not a single alien to be found nor a shotgun to be used; rather, the hero is a girl born on the pages of classic prose who comes wielding a stash of razor-sharp cards.

Ah, what a game. This is what you'll be thinking after playing it, for an hour, heck, maybe even after the first five minutes. You'll love the music, the graphics, the atmosphere, the characters, the plot, the gameplay, the weapons, the enemies, the voice-acting, and pretty much everything else about the game, that is... If you're not totally insane. Never before have I seen a game such as Alice, which loosely-bases itself on a book, but twists everything so it's all the more interesting. It's spooky, it's quirky, it's humorous, it's mysterious... It's all these and a dozen more. If you really want to know the true excellence that is Alice just go ahead and buy it.

So, yeah, American McGee's Alice is a good game. Those looking for a little more style than you can get from Tomb Raider, Rune, etc., are going to find it here. You're also going to find OS X compability, provided you have the RAM for it. American McGee's Alice wants 128MB all to herself, and trust don't want to make her mad. She may look cute, but as a wise man once told me, "A pretty face don't mean no pretty heart."
