While this is an unashamed Space Invaders clone, great presentation, addictive gameplay and an infectious sense of humour set it apart. The main reservation is that it might lead to a Breakout-type onslaught of Space Invaders imitators descending on the unsuspecting ranks of computer gamers.
ST/Amiga Format (Sep, 1988)
If wholesale slaughter is a favourite pastime of yours you'll find Better Dead a rewarding and satisfying experience guaranteeing hours of carnage in the name of beauty. A deeply philosophical encounter.
Tilt (Oct, 1988)
The action is all very predictable and adds nothing new to the pack of shoot-em-ups that already exist. A simultaneous two-player options makes progress easier, but doesn't add greatly to the action. The graphics aren't even much to shout about. Strictly for shoot-em-up freaks who like a tough, if unexciting, challenge. [Amiga version:] The guardians are generally well put together, but otherwise the graphics are rather plain. There are lots of little sound effects and samples that jolly things along.
