To put it simply Leander is THE platformer adventure on the Amiga. For £25.99 you can buy perhaps the best game of 1991 and I guarantee you will be burning the midnight oil in an attempt to find the evil Thanatos.

Control over Leander quickly becomes second nature, but is sophisticated enough to allow high jumping and ladder climbing. Additional touches like the waves, waterfalls and rain make this one of the most classy games for a long while. Well worth the pennies.

Amiga Action (Dec, 1991)
With incredibly smooth animation and innovative character designs, Leander has to be played to be fully appreciated. Using hardware sprites, the programmers have ensured that the update remains smooth throughout. Although sound effects are punchy, they're not as frequent as I would have liked. The music is consistently lively and appropriate to the mood of the game. Programmed to perfection! A simply outstanding Psygnosis product.

Zero (Mar, 1992)
With 22 sub-levels, you certainly won't finish it quickly, and even if you do eventually finish it you can alter the difficulty level in a number of ways - your hit points, your lives and continues can all be changed. The password system helps you avoid having to go through levels you're over-familiar with again and again, the backgrounds are moody and the animation is good. It's just a fine game all round, really.

Hela produktionen känns väldigt japansk, med typiskt rådjursögda figurer, men så vitt jag vet är inte en enda liten stackars japan inblandad i det hela. Ljud och musik håller för övrigt också väldigt hög klass. Tillsammans med spelbarhet och grafik gör det att Leander är ett i synnerhet köpvärt spel, om man nu gillar plattformsspel vill säga.

The only fault I can find with Leander is that it doesn't vary a great deal and some of the action is a tad repetitive. However, nice touches include an interesting line in move-able platforms (a horse-drawn carriage, no less) and the Japanese 'feel' the game has, which is even carried down to a smart bomb effect where our hero can sacrifice a life by committing hari-kari. It is little touches like these, coupled with the addictive - if slightly repetitive - gameplay that raises Leander head and shoulders above most other platform games, and is certainly recommended.

Though ultimately a limited romp, Leander nevertheless manages to offer plenty of short term fun, and what it lacks in inspiration it makes up for in persperation. One of Psygnosis' finest recent moments, and an excellent game in its own right.

While Leander is one of Psygnosis' most accessible releases, it also has some of their old, unlamented quirks like atomic copy protection and no save option. There's an initial configuration menu that will let you select from several difficulty levels and set other options, giving beginners the opportunity to learn how things work. Leander uses code words rather than having a save function, but they aren't given often enough. Much as I like playing Leander, I'm really tired of the first four levels since I've had to fight my way through them every lime I want to try the fifth.

Power Play (Mar, 1992)
Technisch läßt Leander kaum Wünsche offen. Das Spielfeld scrollt butterweich in alle Richtungen, die Grafiken sind schön gezeichnet, der Sound bringt die Fantasy-Stimmung gut rüber. Viele gute Ideen wurden verarbeitet: So sind besondere Plattformen nur über ein Pferdegespann zu erreichen und herunterfallende Säcke dienen als Sprungbrett auf höher gelegene Ebenen. Das "Extra-Schwerter-System" ist ausgeklügelt, obwohl harte Gegner Schwertgeschosse kalt lassen. Der Überlebenskampf fällt deshalb in den höheren Levels etwas unfair aus. Ab und zu geht einem das simple Durchsuchen großer Gebiete ganz schön auf den Senkel. Nicht selten verschleudert man beim Erforschen rätselhafter Schluchten sämtliche Leben. Schon wer die zweite Welt erblickt, kann sich getrost zur Jump'n'Run-Elite zählen. Trotz vieler Gags und dem obligatorischen "Lemmings"-Level bietet mir Leander langfristig zu wenig Abwechslung.

Hier haben die Liverpooler jedenfalls gezeigt, daß sie es auch besser können, als nach dem bescheidenen „Barbarian II“ zu befürchten war. Gut, mit „Turrican 2“ kann es Leander nicht ganz aufnehmen, mit so manchem Konsolen-Game aus Japan aber durchaus!

Play Time (Feb, 1992)
Es fehlt an der nötigen Action, die Anzahl der Gegner ist für ein Plattform einfach zu gering und sie sind zudem noch leicht zu übertölpeln. Die paar guten Animationssequenzen machen das Kraut auch nicht fett. Positiv bewerten möchte ich die gute Bedienbarkeit des Spiels und die deutsche Anleitung. Eine Abspeicherungsmöglichkeit kannst Du allerdings vergessen. Punktegeier haben die Möglichkeit, Ihre Initialen im Highscore zu bewundern. Meine Meinung: Es gibt interessantere Plattform-Games!
