Dragon (Apr, 1991)
PowerMonger is an extremely exciting strategy game. With hundreds upon hundreds of different worlds to conquer, you'll be playing and enjoying PowerMonger long after Bullfrog produces another computer entertainment winner. PowerMonger seems to posses enormous staying power as one of those rare entertainments that will remain in your permanent computer library.
Graphically, Powermonger is in a class of its own. Not only are there thousands of independent characters (as well designed), but elemental disruptions and dozens of land formations combine to provide variety and maintain interest. Colour is appropriately used to enhance realistic scenery. Sound is both realistic and informative and nearby activities may be recognised aurally, so influencing a player's actions. A sublime example of the art of computer gaming, and an essential purchase.
The graphics are simply amazing. The weather conditions of each season have a fabulous visual effect, be it showers of rain or swirling snow-storms. The sound is better still. Birds sing, sheep baah, carrier pigeons coo and after successful combat your army even shouts "hey!" a few times in celebration. The depth of gameplay in PowerMonger is simply unsurpassed with plenty of awesome effects. Watching your men cart a newly invented boat to a river, climb in to it and paddle across is just one effect that'll blow your mind! Guaranteed to last months, PowerMonger is the best strategy game this year - and you can quote me on that!
The One (Oct, 1990)
The most impressive aspect of Powermonger though, is the simplicity of the execution - a rudimentary bank of icons are all you need to carry out the most complex of campaigns. It's easy to get into,a joy to learn, and well nigh impossible to leave alone.
Amiga Format (Jan, 1991)
The drive for world domination will suit those who love clever graphics, amusing sound and masses of gameplay. It takes time to get used to the way this world works. After the initial headaches and frustrated cries, world domination is yours.
Amiga Joker (Nov, 1990)
(page 12)
Zero (Nov, 1990)
Basically though, it all comes back to the conquest aspect of the game, which, let's face it, is what most people are interested in. It's ruddy brilliant. A must for anyone into sheep, strategy and little Populous men, not necessarily in that order.
Score (Dec, 1994)
Compute! (Mar, 1991)
If you enjoy strategy games, Power Monger is a must-buy. It incorporates the best elements of war games with a simple but powerful user interface. The lands become increasingly hard to conquer, but casual players can always stick to the easier sections of the map. Die-hard war gamers who defeat all the computer-controlled levels can try the two-player modem option that, while a bit quirky, lets you take on both computer-controlled armies and a devious human opponent simultaneously, the ultimate challenge.

Far more than a rehash of Populous, Power Monger is the war game for the masses. If you buy one game for your Amiga this year, buy Power Monger.
Zzap! (Feb, 1991)
Powermonger is a very good game that has immense value for money and many unique and well-designed features (such as the seasonal changes). However, the niggly aspects take some shine off of what could, and should, have been a Sizzler.
Amiga Action (Jan, 1991)
Populous broke all barriers of computer game technology and scooped up handfuls of awards for design and sheer ingenuity at various ceremonies throughout the year.
Power Play (Dec, 1990)
Amiga Power (May, 1991)
The brave new face of wargames... which looks suspiciously like Populous. Despite similarities to a certain other title, Powermonger really is an excellent game in its own right.
Retro Archives (Oct 25, 2018)
Populous with a military emphasis and an economic basis.
Where Populous was handsome in a readily portable, squaredoff sort of way, PowerMonger is beautiful, and rather ornate and spindly. Where Populous was "gamey," PowerMonger is imbued with the depth of real life. The terrain is alive with activity. Carrier pigeons are seen carrying your orders to sub-commanders; an encampment leaves behind a dead campfire; sheep shudder on the hillsides, and where there are sheep there are shepherds; people (all equipped with names, homes, jobs and histories) go about their business; and the leaves on trees (all of specific species) change color as the season cycle goes round and round. This is a computer approximation of a living world and should be so treated.
