Official Description (Ad Blurb)

Deep within the Crystal Caves of Icefinger Mountains, the dreaded Snow Witch is plotting to bring on a new ice age. A brave trapper dies in your arms and lays the burden of his mission on your shoulders. But time is running out – will YOU take up the challenge?

Originally written by Ian Livingstone in 1984, Caverns of the Snow Witch celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2014. The ninth book in the Fighting Fantasy series, it expands upon the original version published in WARLOCK magazine, taking you beyond the Crystal Caves.

Relive the adventures in the Icefinger Mountains, lovingly updated for PC, Mac and Linux. Presented in full colour with realistic physics-based dice rolling for battles, an auto-updated adventure sheet and stat keeping.

One of the best gamebooks of the series, my favourite of the Tin Man ports

The Good
I think this book had one of the best stories. I really enjoyed the adventures where you had companions (that didn't die right at the start) and Redswift and Stubb I thought were particularly good ones. Some may not know that a short version of the adventure was published first, in Warlock magazine. Rather than make the road to the snow witch longer in the book version, the adventure actually continues on after her defeat. You move on from the snow lands and revisit some places from previous gamebooks. Dungeon adventures are fine, but I like the indoor/outdoor variety of Caverns of the Snow Witch. The snow witch's crystal caverns have a different feel to say the warlock's firetop mountain, perhaps a more female feel.

The Bad
That f**ing crystal warrior in the middle of the caverns! Basically you have to be too lucky to beat him.

I was also disappointed that the original artwork (Gary Ward & Edward Crosby) wasn't colourized.

The Bottom Line
It's my favourite of Tin Man's e-gamebook ports of the original books, though there are probably other original books I like better.
