Tap Sports Football is the first American football game in the Tap Sports series of mobile games. Like the Baseball games in the series it uses simple touch screen based controls where a single well timed tap is enough to do most actions on the field. The player however only has control of the offensive part of the sport while the defensive part is automatized. When doing a passing play a target shows where the ball will be thrown and a line shows the run of the receiver and all the player has to do is time the throw. Alternatively the player can hit the outlet pass button and the quarterback will then choose another receiver. When doing a running play tapping the screen will cause the ball holder to do a cut. Before a play the player gets to choose a general strategy (for example balanced, aggressive or conservative). During a play it is possible to use audibles to change tactics.
The game's off field activities are very similar to those of the series' baseball games. New players can be signed by buying draft picks (random players) or free agents in the store and these are paid with either gold or cash which are the game's virtual currencies. There are also franchise players that can be bought with special coins that cost a large amount of gold. These players have the highest ratings but can only be used for a limited number of matches. There are also various boosts and upgrades that can be bought to improve the abilities of the team.
Matches are played online against other players and they are asynchronous which means that both don't have to play at the same time. Once one player has completed a turn he has to wait for the other to complete his. In addition to single matches it's possible to take part of various competitions such as leagues, tournaments and events. There are also blitz games which are fast paced games where each player gets one drive from the 25 yard line and have to attempt to get the highest score within a three minute time limit.
