That’s unfortunate as Angry Birds 2 is a great game. It’s a worthy sequel if you look past those energy issues. The addition of the Arena, offering challenges and a leaderboard component is a sweet move, and new bird Silver is a fun one to learn. Multi stage levels are also pretty satisfying as well as boss battles, but that’s only ever going to be the case when you can actually play Angry Birds 2. Be prepared to love Angry Birds 2 but it’s a tough kind of love. You’re really going to wish there was a premium option in there.

And remember, pretty much every freemium lever can be tweaked in response to data on how people are actually playing the game – which unlike many of the wargames and match-three puzzlers on mobile, has strong characters and an engaging sense of fun at its core, rather than a hollow business model.

That’s not to say Angry Birds 2 is a bad game. That’s not the case at all. It’s still as fun as ever to take out the glass base of a pig’s tower with a beautiful bluebird shot. But neither is it possible to play the game without observing how the deck has been stacked against you in hopes of getting you to spend money on in-app purchases.

In practice, Angry Birds 2’s limited lives and ever-shifting stages don’t completely ruin the fun of launching birds at pigs. It’s still fun to pop in, cause some destruction, and then go about your day. But it’s a more superficial kind of fun - a pale shadow of what Angry Birds can provide when at its best. It may look dramatically better than ever, but the legendary staying power of the original Angry Birds just isn’t there in the sequel.

Somewhere underneath this shameful collection of monetisation gimmicks there’s a decent game waiting to be played, but it never gets a chance to fly as free as it should.

Angry Birds 2 proves that the Angry formula is still fun, but Rovio isn't doing itself any favors by gating that fun left and right. Angry Birds is supposed to be a series you can just pick up and play, and I have no idea what they were thinking here -- other than "more money."
