Anti-Matter Splatter

Moby ID: 68785

Description

Anti-Matter Splatter is a side view single screen shooter where you control a spacecraft at the bottom of the screen, moving left or right, and your mission is to protect humans below you, who are moving across the screen. At the top of the screen is an alien who drops bombs and the bombs have to be shot before they land and kill any human it touches. Between you and the alien are four platforms that move either left to right, or right to left and when shot destroys part of the platform. Any gaps allows the bombs to fall through but when a platform is completely destroyed it appears whole again. If you are hit by a bomb or all the humans are killed then it is game over.

Another good original game. Shame about the sound.

The Good
Anti-Matter Splatter is yet another game from a minor company that has created something original, not just a clone of Space Invaders, Scramble, or what have you. There is a line of humans who are threatened by a series of barrels containing anti-matter being thrown down by the devil at the top of the screen. The barrels will travel along rotating girders, drop through holes, and make their way toward the humans. Your job is to protect them by shooting the barrels with your laser.

The difficulty of the game is quite high. You are dealing with about ten barrels at the same time, and you need to keep an eye on them. Hold the fire button down and you get awarded with rapid fire, making it easier to destroy the barrels. The graphics and animations are great. I like how each girder has a different color, and how the humans move positions if one of them is destroyed. I also like the explosion that occurs when one of the barrels hits you.

Just like the majority of games released around the same time, there are no stages to deal with. The score counter is incremented by one, and it will boost dramatically with every barrel you destroy. Because of this, there is a good reason to “score attack”.

The Bad
The music consists of just two tones that play over and over again, and it gets worse because the more humans get destroyed, it speeds up. There isn't even an option to turn the sound on or off.

The Bottom Line
Yet another original game on the VIC-20 and one where you always try to beat your previous scores. You are kept on edge as barrels come toward your humans left, right, and center, and you need to destroy them all before they reach the humans. The graphics and animations are good, and this is a game you may play once in a while. You might want to turn the volume all the way down, though.
