Apple II version

Surprisingly playable once you understand what to do

The Good
It was colourful, had easy controls, & kept your interest whilst playing the game. The cards in the game are fairly clear as to what they mean, with nice pictures & writing on them. Background, although basic, suits the game. The controls needed were easy to use, & mostly clear in what you needed to do.

The Bad
The lack of instructions delays you playing at first, as it took a few minutes to fully understand what I needed to do, though you are able to know what it entails without too much trouble. I expect this maybe had more to do with the copy available, which for some reason wouldn't load the instructions once starting the game.

The Bottom Line
This is an adaptation of the card game Mille Bornes, though it is board like in its look, with a mixture of the two genres. The idea of the game is to get up to 5,000 miles before the AI, by playing a few hands, in each of which you have to go 700 miles using the cards, whilst at the same time overcoming mechanical hazards. You are helped with the hazards by gaining & using trump type cards. At the end of the round the points are added up, with any bonuses you gain. Further rounds continue until one player gets to 5,000 miles. Game takes around 20-30 minutes on average, depending how fast or slow you want to play.

Once you understand what you are doing, it is a nice gentle one player game, which you can play when you have a bit of spare time on your hands. I must admit being pleasantly surprised how playable the game is, considering the time it was released, & can recommend it for people who like to play something different, that they can play in their own time & leisure.

One further piece of interest is that the author made an updated version of the game for the Apple IIgs in 1990, though I have yet to play this version.
