A powerful Spirit of the Forest took over Tabata's body and Raoni is preparing a ritual to save him, but one ingredient is missing: a feather of a rare harpy named Uiruueté. Aritana decides to bring the feather from the top of the highest mountain, through the lands of the man-eater Mapinguari.
Aritana and the Harpy's Feather is a platform game based on indigenous Brazilian myths. The player controls Aritana, a young warrior. Aritana's actions depend on his stance: agility or strength. The agility stance allows Aritana to run faster, jump higher, thread lightly over fragile surfaces and to avoid damage from falling. The strength stance allows Aritana to attack, search secrets, activate slow motion, perform combos and see enemy attributes such as weak spots. Not all actions will be available to Aritana from the beginning: he'll need to find totems to learn new abilities and combos.
Aritana has Raoni's staff as a weapon and can use it to attack the enemies while in the strength stance. The color of the enemies tells how vulnerable they are to attacks. Blue enemies are defenseless, purple enemies can only be attacked in certain spots and red enemies are invincible. To see the weak spots on purple enemies, Aritana must be in the attack stance. The attacks are performed by pressing keys (or using the right stick in the gamepad) to specific directions, thus, to attack an enemy from above, Aritana must jump over it and press the down attack key. Some obstacles can only be overcame by performing combos, such as hitting enemies in a sequence like: above, below, above. Performing combos will also award the player power ups such as guaraná beams or health leaves.
Aritana can't use both stances at the same time, so the gameplay relies heavily on exchanging and combining the stances. For instance, to reach a higher place, Aritana must jump while in agility stance then attack an enemy mid air changing to the strength stance, bumping on it and reaching the higher platform.
Throughout the stages Aritana collects items such as guaraná beams, guaraná juice and little frog amulets called Muiraquitã. Collecting 100 guaraná beams awards Aritana's one guaraná juice. Guaraná juices are the lives (one-up, extra guy) in the game. If five Muiraquitãs are collected during a stage, at the end of it Aritana makes an offering to an Offering Statue, being transported to the Spirit's World. In these bonus stages, Aritana must find his way through a maze until he finds a healing plant. The healing plant expands Aritana's health meter.
The game is comprised of nine levels divided in three environments: the forest, the cavern and the mountain. At the end of every third level Aritana will have to fight Mapinguari. These fights are scripted and every encounter demands a different strategy to beat Mapinguari.
