Ice Hockey is well implemented and a lot of fun to play with a friend. The player's animation is well done and there is a lot more strategy - from shot angles to checking your opponent - than you might expect. As a "common" cart, we highly recommend getting a copy! Learn to play in the single-player regular mode, then select game variation #4 and take on a friend at high speed!
The Video Game Critic (Aug 15, 2001)
The computer is a worthy challenge, but nothing can beat this game's two-player action. Ice Hockey by Activision is not only a sports classic - it's even better than the real thing!
The Atari Times (May 28, 2004)
In the final analysis, this is one of the better games out there for the 2600 and well-worth finding. It might not be as common as, say, Asteroids or Space Invaders, but you won't have to break the bank to pick up a copy, either. And, best of all, it's so easy to play you won't need a manual, either.
Woodgrain Wonderland (Apr 16, 2017)
The players are colourful and well-animated. The computer opponent is strong if a little predictable, although there is generally more fun to be had playing the two-player variations. Ice Hockey is an elegantly simple classic. It is one of the best sports games available for the Atari 2600 and a cart I enjoyed endlessly as a youngster. If I have one complaint it’s that the play could be a little faster. Otherwise, I have few quibbles.
All Game Guide (1998)
This game was one of my favorites on the Atari 2600 when I was a kid, and it still is. I still find the gameplay solid, and the computer can be a tough opponent -- it rarely gives you an inch and is capable of some great comebacks. Two-player action was always the best way back when, and the games were always heated.
Retrogaming.it (Jul 18, 2008)
Game Freaks 365 (2002)
Sports games aren’t for everybody, even today. If you’re not a fan of hockey, this game isn’t going to change your mind, but if you are a fan of hockey and you want to see how hockey video games got their start, this game is quite fun despite its simplicity. It is proof that Activision certainly knew what they were doing when they went into business for themselves.
