Woodgrain Wonderland (Apr 28, 2017)
To me it feels like a proto-NES platformer, albeit on a much smaller scale. I’d be lying if I said I get the same jolt from the game that I got when I was 12, but considering the immense enjoyment it’s given me over the past three decades, it’s fair to say this 6K cartridge packs a punch disproportionate to its technical capacity.

The Video Game Critic (Jul 09, 2006)
The ending is admittedly weak (if you can even call it an ending) but overall this is a quality title. There are two levels of difficulty, and the second one offers a genuine challenge. If you own an Atari 2600, Jungle Hunt is worth tracking down.

VideoGame (Mar, 1992)

Computer Games (Nov, 1983)
Considering the limitations of the VCS, this adaptation of the arcade hit is quite good. There are four colorful scrolling scenes and each setting contains its own bunch of obstacles. The cartridge includes two versions, one for beginners and one for experts, so every member of the family can expect to be challenged. As for the graphics, don't expect the detail of the arcade game, but all in all, they're satisfactory. At least you can readily tell what everything is. And there are some features that are rarely seen in a VCS game. For example, when you kill a crocodile, the points that you have earned appear on the screen. This game is not quite up to the level of Activision 's Pitfall, but enough of the flavor of the arcade hit has been maintained to make it a winner.

If you are a fan of platformers and are a fan of the Atari 2600, you should strongly consider giving this game a try if you can find it. There certainly are longer and more diverse platformers out today, but this game remains fun nonetheless. For an Atari 2600 game, this game will last a fair amount of time, but it isn't one like Space Invaders that has the potential to last nearly forever. Overall, this game is easy to recommend for the Atari 2600 gamer.

Oldies Rising (Aug 22, 2012)

Jungle Hunt controls exactly like the arcade version. The stick controls Sir Dudley, and pressing the button causes him to jump, or use his knife in stage two. The graphics, while not quite as good as the arcade, are some of the better ones done for the VCS. The sounds are fairly close to the arcade as well, although the "Tarzan" yell that starts the game is gone, as is the bouncy jungle music. This is definitely one of the best arcade ports the VCS has ever seen. If you're a fan of the arcade version, you owe it to yourself to check Jungle Hunt out.

Megablast (1992)

Retro Game Reviews (Apr 18, 2016)
It's hard to recommend the Atari 2600 version of Jungle Hunt over its Colecovision counterpart as it doesn't feel like a truly authentic experience due to the many compromises that were made. Saying that, if you can look past the glaring omissions it's still a decent port and there's plenty of fun to be had.

I'll give Atari credit for one thing. They've done a commendable job of cramming all four of the original Jungle Hunt screens into one tiny cartridge. What they left out, though, was the challenge. I don't know about you, but I don't enjoy engaging in a contest in which the final outcome is practically decided right from the start.
