The Video Game Critic (Aug 06, 1999)
There are a plethora of maze invisibility modes to add to the challenge. With an astonishing 256 variations in all, this is one of the better two-player games for the system.
8-bit Central Retro Gaming (2016)
Maze Craze has 16 game variations that give it a lot more engaging play with 2 players. From invisibility to chasing down robbers - or getting killed by robbers - this is a much better game than you might think at first glance. Great fun!
Game Freaks 365 (2006)
If you just want to leisurely find your way through mazes then, there's full-maze shown and zero enemies available as an option, but, in all honesty, where's the fun in that? But it leaves this game with a level of challenge that is right for every player, a feat which is commendable in any game. Although this game would later be outshone in many aspects by the better of the Pac-man clones, it still stands as a game that is great for Atari 2600 gamers of all skill levels, and, for that reason, I recommend you consider getting it if you can find it.
Random Access (Apr 05, 2018)
The graphics are crude with the cops being an odd shape resembling a bug and the robbers being a square. There is no music and the sounds are likewise crude. But these are typical of the limited capabilities of the Atari. The mazes themselves are not very large or complex, but are randomly generated. In some ways, I feel that this game was ahead of its time and would have served better to be on a later console. However, I still find the game enjoyable and the variations add a lot to the game.
Woodgrain Wonderland (Jun 18, 2017)
If nothing else, Maze Craze is never the same game twice, and that’s likely a big reason why it has become something of a fan favourite. You can play games where you capture robbers, avoid robbers, speed yourself up, slow yourself down and literally black out entire sections of the screen.
