Woodgrain Wonderland (Nov 26, 2017)
There is so much strategy involved just in speeding up, slowing down, shooting or not shooting fuel tanks – it’s the very definition of a game that’s easy to learn but hard to play. Regardless of what video game generation you come from, you owe it to yourself to play River Raid.
Defunct Games (Jan 07, 2014)
River Raid still stands as a testament to scrolling shoot-em-up game design. Anyone can load it up and enjoy it. Luckily, you don't have to dig the Atari 2600 out of storage to play it since it's shown up on every single Activision collection ever released. You have no excuse; check out River Raid!
Tilt (Jul, 1983)
The Video Game Critic (Jul 29, 2011)
River Raid is expertly programmed with crisp controls, smooth animation, and tight collision detection. Its flicker-free graphics feature multi-colored objects, satisfying explosions, and even some scenery on the riverbanks. You control the speed of your jet by pushing the joystick up or down, and you can select between straight or guided missiles. The difficulty ramps gradually so despite having only one skill level both novices and experts can enjoy the game equally. Deceptively simple on the surface, River Raid will always give you a run for the money. A sequel would eventually follow, but how do you expect to improve on perfection? If you own a 2600, it really doesn't get much better than this.
Retroage (Aug 07, 2010)
The Atari Times (Dec 04, 2003)
River Raid: more fun than a can of Raid any day, especially in the hands of a couple of TV-watching morons.
Game Freaks 365 (Jul 03, 2010)
There is no logical reason for anybody who owns an Atari 2600 to be without this game. If you own the system and do not have a copy of this game, shame on you. Go out and buy it immediately. Despite the lack of game modes, this game has replay value that is virtually unending, so buying it would be a decision you would never regret.
Designed by Carol Shaw, the first female game programmer for home consoles, River Raid is an early vertically scrolling shooter in which players guide a jet fighter above a river while shooting helicopters, battleships, hot air balloons, land tanks, jets and bridges. The fighter in this overhead view game can accelerate and decelerate, and is equipped with unlimited ammo. However, it must refuel frequently by flying over fuel depots. There are no levels as such, but bridges act as save points. One of the better games for the Atari VCS, River Raid has tight controls, a constantly changing landscape, strategic flying action, adequate sound effects and crisp, detailed graphics.
Le Geek (May, 2008)
While modern shoot 'em ups make River Raid seem quaint, it's still thrilling to see how far you can go, as the enemies get deadlier and numerous, and the river becomes more and more treacherous. Highly recommended.
neXGam (Jun 27, 2013)
TeleMatch (May, 1983)
Atari HQ (2002)
With crisp and colorful graphics and great gameplay, Shaw has created a winner. It does get tougher as you progress, especially since fuel becomes less plentiful and the fact that you have to do some fancy acrobatics to avoid hitting the ground. This shooter soars high in my book.
Hello, my name is Matt, and I'm not a classic gamer. No matter how hard I tried, I could never sit for an extended period of time only to rack up a high score. I have to have some sort of finale, a conclusion, anything except a never-ending game. There are a few games that transcend this problem though. River Raid is one of the games that I could sit for hours and play, growing ever-frustrated by the monotony, but unable to drop the controller.
VideoGame (Mar, 1991)
Even though River Raid is similar to many video games in theme — delay your inevitable destruction for as long as possible — the everchanging scenery and the need for a constant shifting of strategy to address the situation at hand gives the game an appeal not found in the ordinary one-scenario video games.
