Why in the world does Mattel save their good work for Atari VCS games? First they make sports games that even rival their own. Then they make an almost exact copy of Astrosmash. Now they make a version of the masterpiece Star Strike that is probably even better than the Intellivision version.
As much as I admire Mattel for defying arcade conventions at a time when the arcade was king, I still think Star Strike would have been a better game if they would have included standard scoring and some extra lives. As it is, however, it’s a pretty good crack at a Death Star battle-style game at a time when Lucasfilm was dragging its heels when it came to officially-sanctioned product.
I was intent on beating this thing at least once, and it took some perseverance. Win or lose, you're treated to a short ending sequence. The difficulty switches allow you to configure four skill levels. There's not much to Star Strike, but the challenge might just keep you coming back for more.
