ST Format (Dec, 1989)
Hound of Shadow is described by Electronic Arts as a role playing game, but I would tend to compare it more to an adventure. There are role playing elements, but most of the game plays like a conventional graphical adventure. What does make it different however, is the way your character develops as a result of outside influences, such as phobias. Other than its poor parser it's an excellent game that should give you plenty of sleepless nights: when you're not up playing it, it will be on your mind...
Eldritch have an excellent system on their hands. Their choice of the Cthulu Mythos was very wise - a nice change from the usual fantasy scenario, I have no hesitation in recommending The Hound Of Shadow to anyone. It oozes atmosphere and reeks of pure, unadulterated quality.
Aufgrund der unzähligen Möglichkeiten, die sich durch die verschiedenen Charaktere ergeben, dürfte langer Spielspaß, gute Englischkenntnisse vorausgesetzt, garantiert sein. Die knallharten Rätsel tun da ihr übriges.
Zero (Jan, 1990)
Each time you play, you can load in a previously created character or create a new one. The way to build up your character, creates an involvement like no previous ST RPG game has ever done. Shame the game itself's just a plain old adventure that could have been written on an 8-bit machine. The early stages are pure page-turning. If it had better parsing and less of a feel that you're reading a book, then you'd be talking...
Power Play (Jan, 1990)
Hounds of Shadow ist kein Spiel, das man "schnell mal eine Stunde" lädt. Schon allein das "Charakter-Basteln" braucht Zeit und Überlegung. Auch die Geschichte ist komplex und geht unter die Haut: Nicht umsonst orientierten sich die Programmierer an dem Werk H.P. Lovecrafts, dem literarischen Meister des Okkulten. Dementsprechend anspruchsvoll lesen sich die englischen Texte, sie sind garantiert nichts für Anfänger. Leider machte der Parser bei einem Belastungstest recht schnell schlapp - ärgerlich bei einem so anspruchsvollen Spiel. Trotzdem: Wer "Lurking Horror" mochte, Text-Adventures nicht scheut und auf intelligente Stories steht, kann das Programm fast blind kaufen. Alle anderen sollten Hounds of Shadow erst anspielen, bevor sie den Geldbeutel zücken.
Having spent a good deal of time wrestling with the game I feel that many improvements and refinements are required before Timeline is used for other plots. In the end, frustration with the system outweighed my desire to solve the plot puzzles. Having said that I do look forward to future releases on the system.
