Most flight simulator aficionados are already reaching for their wallets, just at the mention of MiG, but for those of you who are considering your first flight sim, fear not. MiG-29 doesn't disappoint. It's an excellent, rewarding game for newcomers and old hands alike, and it's sure to keep your head in the clouds for a long time to come.
MiG 29M probably won't appeal to quite as broad an audience as other more comprehensive sims (Flight Of The Intruder, for example). However, the fact remains that - apart from its predecessor - there's nothing else quite like it: it's nice to see a politically neutral flight sim for once and if you're after a technically impressive flying experience Soviet-style, MiG 29M is hard to beat.

When MiG-29 first came out more than two years ago it was fast and furious and was greeted with open arms from flight sim enthusiasts. Today, it still compares favourably with the likes of MicroProse's flight sims although it hasn't quite got the depth of something like B-17 Flying Fortress which re reviewed in STF 48. If you're looking for a competent flight sim, but don't want to splash out for the better priced ones, get it.

There seems to be a myriad of combat simulators available at the moment. Despite being modelled on a Soviet fighter, MiG-29 doesn't offer anything new. The graphical update is very quick and the on-screen representation is good. But the sound effects didn't really impress me, the engine being the mainstay of the effects. Personally, I found MiG-29 a disappointment. Despite the smart presentation, the game came with meagre instructions. All in all, MiG-29 doesn't live up to its promise of being one of the best flight sims available.
Domark's much-vaunted entry into the flight-sim market is said to be an ultra-realistic simulation of the MiG 29. While this may be true, as a game MiG suffers from a lack of speed and things to do, and in this respect compares badly to the likes of F-19. So buy that instead.
Power Play (May, 1991)
