The One (Feb, 1989)
Night Hunter is one of the most satisfying uses I've found for my ST. Okay, the idea of vampire games has been done to death, but this one is fresh, exciting, entertaining and very addictive. It took ages to complete the first level but not once did boredom set in. Frustration yes. Boredom no. It's a classy game in all departments: the sound, graphics and playability are all equally impressive.
Basically an arcade adventure, Night Hunter stands out from the rest due to its brilliant sound effects, well animated characters and suitably spooky backdrops. The only drawback is Dracula's slow response. Standing there taking arrow after arrow is not the way to win, but the bloody vampire just won't crouch down until he's taken about three through that cold heart of his. Very frustrating, especially when Van Helsing serves up his deadly stakes.
Dracula's mission tends toward the tricky side right from the outset, and it's annoying that death sends him back to the very start of each level. Patience and persistence soon pay off, but the urge to complete all 30 levels could wear off after a while.
The graphics aren't marvellous, but there are some neat touches like rats and frogs leaping around. Platform fanatics are recommended to try this out, although those with less enthusiasm for this type of game might find it gets a little tedious after prolonged play.
Retrogaming History (Nov 14, 2008)
ST/Amiga Format (Feb, 1989)
Sound is limited to bloodsucking slurps and lots of spot effects which quickly become monotonous, but when Dracula extends his arm and goes for a bit of blood-sucking he actually looks as if he's enjoying what he's doing.
Power Play (Mar, 1989)
