DescriptionAs always Jonesch went down to the river to get water. As he walked towards the stream he noticed a basket on the shore. In it he finds a baby with a strange amulet around his neck. He chose to take care of this lost child and raise him. Soon he discovered that the child had a great gift for magic and when the child was old enough, he send him to the mage academy of Avencast in the hopes that he would be able to satisfy his desire to know more about magic there.
In Avencast: Rise of the Mage, the player takes on the role of a young apprentice mage in the Avencast Magic Academy. In the beginning, the player is tasked with to meet three Master Wizards and gain their stamp of approval before entering the final examination for graduation. During this time, the player will learn the basic game mechanics quite unique to this game.
The game introduces three schools of magic: Blood Magic, primary used for magical melee attacks; Soul Magic, primary used for magical ranged spells; and Summoning, which summons monsters to aid the player. Use of magic will drain the player of mana, which regenerates quite quickly. Spells must be assigned to quick keys before they can be used. When the character levels up, skills points may be used to purchase these spells, each with a level requirement.
The player may engage in melee or ranged combat. Both melee and ranged combat uses the staff as weapon; melee combat consisting of martial art moves while ranged combat allows the player to cast magical bolts at a target, with controls similar to a third person shooter. The game also emphasis on action-type combat with the the player's ability to dodge though quick moves and rolling.
