So…don't play it if you're looking solely for games you can play while relaxing before bed, I guess? Because otherwise, there's absolutely no reason not to download Bit.Trip Presents…Runner 2: Future Legend of Rhythm Alien immediately. It's just that great.

There’s practically no end to the amount of good in Runner2, from its flawless rhythm-platforming gameplay to the heaps of extras that will keep players of all abilities busy long after they’ve “beat” the game. All of this is wrapped up in a charming and surreally engaging package, with ludicrous commercials before games, worlds that exist inside giant whales or inexplicably sad mountains, and never-nude Big Foots that run through the background in blue jean cutoffs. When even moments of sheer controller-throwing frustration don’t make you stop playing, don’t for a second cause you to pause and consider taking a break, someone has done something very right. That someone is Gaijin Games, and that something is BIT.TRIP Presents...Runner2: Future Legend of Rhythm Alien.

Bit.Trip Presents Runner 2: Future Legend of Rhythm Alien is a masterful work of art. It has it all: hilarious presentation, great aesthetic, stellar music, and compelling gameplay. It’s a rare sequel that improves on the original in every single way imaginable. I highly recommend this game, and it’s one of the best values you can get. You owe it to yourself to pick up this amazing title as soon as you can.

Runner2 is the type of sequel you dream happens. It takes the concepts and gameplay of the original and advances them in every way. Gaijin Games didn’t just make a great game—it made one of the best side-scrolling platformers in recent memory. We’ve had some great games on the Wii U eShop so far, but now we have the young platform’s first masterpiece.

Runner2 brings out an escalated joy above what all other BIT.TRIP titles have been able to accomplish, and what I find must stunning is that the game doesn't need to drag it out of you. Attachment happens so easily and appreciation flows so actively, it's actually scary. When you look at all the bits and pieces that have gone into this incredibly cohesive and magnetic whole, it's hard to imagine Runner2 being a more successful, more imaginative take than what it is in its current form. Glowing brightly, Runner2 stands as a supreme example of wholehearted, spare-no-expense design that exceeds every inch of the original's fundamentals, and as a concept bearing much heart, its stellar execution causes it to stand alone.

Bit.Trip Runner 2 is cracking game, and sees Gaijin Games complete their evolution from cult indie studio to development big boys. A wonderful title that pours joy into the living room in a flood of musical wonderment. Challenging, inviting and long lasting, Runner 2 is a triumph.

Runner 2 ensnares your emotions with an artful cocktail of music and gameplay, sweeping you along in its rhythm and lighting up a smile on your face. It's a wonderful sensation to lose yourself in this game, whether you are facing down the formidable challenges of The Mounting Sadds or simply going for a breezy run in The Emerald Brine. Runner 2 doesn't just offer you an entertaining experience; it throws its arm around you companionably, ushers you into its whimsical world, and makes you feel like part of something special.

Runner2 feels like a very natural progression for the series. The team at Gaijin Games has crafted a more nuanced and impressive follow-up to what was great title in its own right. Avant-garde but with a healthy respect for the past, Runner2 is a marvelous rhythmic platformer that just about anyone should be able to enjoy.

Throughout the campaign, you naturally unlock new characters as well, who all have their own strange and silly animated personalities (Reverse Merman stands out for an obvious reason). Even though Runner2 is a single-player game, it’s fun to trade off levels with a friend simply to appreciate the finer details, like the different way every character dances or when bigfoot lumbers into the background. You just can’t absorb this stuff when you’re laser-focused on sweet, sweet survival.

BIT.TRIP Presents Runner 2: Future Legend of Rhythm Alien is a music game that doesn't bother with instruments. You won't find any plastic guitars, drum sets, or even a turntable. You can't form a band, there's no audience, and you certainly won't be yelling at your buddies for screwing up the guitar solo. And yet, it's one of the finest music games ever made.

For the most part, Runner2’s style befits this extremely engaging gameplay. Commander Video and the other selectable runners are all wonderfully animated (the likes of Whetfahrt Cheesebörger and Unkle Dill would fit right in on Adult Swim), and the five worlds exhibit unique visual and music styles. (The bleeps and bloops of your jumps and attacks play in tune with an overarching song that evolves as you power up.) However, we didn’t dig the fourth world, whose red saturation mutes your colorful costumes while obfuscating key items and obstacles. Moreover, each world starts to get repetitive after about three-quarters of its stages, once you’ve learned its various tricks.

Bit.Trip Presents...Runner2: Future Legend of Rhythm Alien is the best of several worlds. It's a both a Platformer that prefers pure reaction over trial and error memorization and a Runner reaching for complexity beyond a simple endless marathon. Surprisingly, Runner2 is also an accomplished rhythm game and one hell of a weird visual experience, should you choose to pay close enough attention. From any of its angle, Runner2 merits interest and appreciation.

Both love letter to the purist gameplay ideals of yesteryear and free-spirited embrace into what the future may yet hold, RUNNER2 is the rare breed that wants to grab you by the hand and lead you on an earnest, cheerful adventure. This is a tightly constructed, demanding yet addictive title that is chock full of clever ideas and never loses sight of what makes games fun — even if the enthusiastic visuals obstruct from time to time. Smoothing out the difficulty curve goes a long way to open the game up for those who threw their hands in the air out of frustration at previous titles, accomplished even more impressively without dumbing down the higher end of the skill tree. With challenge as big as its heart, RUNNER2 is easily one of the best games on the Wii U eShop.

Bit.

Fortunately Bit.Trip Presents Runner 2: Future Legend of Rhythm Alien concludes with its strongest zone, one that integrates the retro look of previous Bit.Trip games with the grand visuals of the new iteration. As the difficulty escalates through the area, culminating in a unique left-running boss battle, Runner 2 realizes the full potential of its synaesthetic design, and playing the game becomes an experience of joy. The characters dance on the screen, but the player dances with his fingers.

BIT.TRIP Presents... Runner2: Future Legend of Rhythm Alien is a long name for game, but it compensates with great quality and replay value. If you master the controls, Runner2 is a deeply satisfying game that will keep you coming for more. Not for revealing the ending of a story that doesn't really matter, but to keep your name on the first position.

Gripes aside, Runner 2 is the perfect follow up to the original and easily surpasses its predecessor in every way. Gaijin have really developed the usually simplistic genre into something with a lot of depth and a tremendous amount of replayability. It can be enjoyed by casual gamers as much as seasoned platform addicts with a penchant for high score chasing. Runner 2 will make you smile and it will make you swear out loud, but it will keep you coming back as it is such a hypnotic and enjoyable experience.

Runner 2 is a bit of a one-trick pony, but it’s a trick that’s done so flawlessly and with such variation that I don’t mind seeing it again and again. It merges audio and visuals better than pretty much anything else on the market. It’s accessible. It’s got more content than you’d think. It’s one of the best auto-runners on the market, and one of the best games for creating a Zen state of playing and reacting without thinking.

Temporary frustrations aside, Runner2 is a simple, lovely jog to the right that slowly builds into a manageably hectic rightward run. The easy difficulty might speed your passage through the world, but it's less fun. So don't rob yourself of a new and entirely needless motor skill. Put it on Rather Hard, and stick at it until the skills lodge in your fingers. It's worth it.

PlayStation 3Hardcore Gamer Magazine (Mar 14, 2013)
If you stick with the original runner or his female counterpart, don’t mind a bit of iffy 70s-throwback art, and can forgive the repetitious level backgrounds, the actual running/jumping/sliding gameplay rapidly gets under the skin, demanding more and better play. Miss a single gold in a long line of complicated jumps? You’d better believe that’s a quick suicide and a retry, no matter how controller-shatteringly frustrating the learning experience has been so far. Thankfully, a crazy hard level is usually followed by something a bit more reasonable, and if you’re utterly stuck, there’s no penalty for dropping down a difficulty level just to get past a particularly troublesome spot. Other than that creeping sense of failure that pushes you to go back and try again, that is.

BIT.TRIP Presents: Runner 2 - Future Legend of Rhythm Alien is a game packed with many highs and few lows. The beautiful graphics and quirky charm make it easy to fall in the love with Runner 2, even when playing through the same level 50 times. The frustration level here is undeniable, yet Runner 2 still inevitably forces the player to take on just one more level. It’s an insane retro-dripped trip worth taking.

Wii UEdge (Apr 24, 2013)
Runner 2’s cheery presentation – Gaijin could hardly have chosen a more likeable narrator than Charles Martinet – makes those moments of frustration easy to forgive, and it’s a much more inclusive game than its austere forerunner. Anyone concerned that it lacks its predecessor’s implacability, meanwhile, can rest easy: the steadily dwindling friend tallies on our post-run leaderboards are convincing proof that Runner’s sharpest edges remain intact.

Xbox 360D+PAD Magazine (Mar 05, 2013)
Individually, no aspect of Runner2 stands out as truly original – it has music tied to gameplay, it is an auto-scrolling platform game, it has mock-retro and mock-pulp stylings. But as a complete package it has a unique charm. While the elements that make this up are perhaps predictably unpredictable (giant talking gherkins, a comedy human cannonball bonus stage, frowning hills in the backgrounds) the whole is so earnest, and the gameplay so simple and compelling, that it is hard to criticise it. It is a game heavily invested in gaming’s history and nature in its debts to retro graphics styles and the platform genre but also one which combines them with the medium’s new direction in its use of the auto-scrolling form.

WindowsDiehard GameFan (Apr 12, 2013)
This game isn’t just a conglomeration of a bunch of parts… It’s an entire package. The charming atmosphere the game creates, as well as the intensity and enjoyable gameplay, make this game worth getting, even for people who maybe aren’t the best at rhythm games or have had negative experiences in the past. It’s addictive, it’s pleasing to the senses, and overall, just a good time.

Wii UDiehard GameFan (Apr 05, 2013)
Bit.Trip Presents…Runner2: Future Legend of Rhythm Alien, aside from possessing one of the most unnecessarily long titles I’ve ever encountered, at least provides a game experience that is of respectable length. Running through each stage and reacting to every obstacle that you see at the last second is akin to doing a speedrun of a Sonic the Hedgehog game, but with music that plays along with your actions. The controls are responsive despite the impressive repertoire given to Commander Video, and underneath the simplicity lies a game with a surprising amount of depth. If that sounds like a recipe for success to you, then I suggest you run out and go buy it.

The way Runner2 mixes together the graphics, sound and the way it plays is both powerful and an example of what game design should be. It’s also really fun.
