B.O.T.S.S.: Battle of the Solar System is first person mech shooter. It was one of the two arcade games produced by Microprose, by then a company mostly known for it's simulation and strategy titles. The arcade machine utilized powerful hardware for it's time to display fast polygonal 3D graphics without textures. In this game you control a battlemech, human piloted mechanized suit that can operate on different celestial bodies in solar system. Usually, the objective is to cripple enemy base or destroy a certain number of vehicles. There are other battlemechs that look a lot like those found in Mechwarrior universe as well as various flying and land machines.

Unlike F-15 Strike Eagle, the previous arcade game using the same hardware and 3D-engine, in Battle of the Solar System you are limited by a small battlefield and don't have to return to your base to complete the mission. Once the objectives have been fullfilled the mech would leave the automatically. Also, unlike jet the mech doesn't move continuously and similar in controls to the standards of first person shooter genre.

One notable difference from many arcade games is that you are able to refill health and ammo during the mission using your point. Start button brings the "in-game store", where purchase could be made. If you are short on finances it is possible to exchange "continues" for in-game currency.
