One of my favorite World War Two video games on any system, if the couple of glitches were fixed it would be my favorite over Call of Duty on the PC. But for your home console, buy this great game and enjoy it. Hopefully they are working hard (after a vacation) on Brothers in Arms: Battle of the Bulge which is the last big fight the 101st was part of in World War 2.

An excellent and authentic single player experience, combining great game play based on squad leadership with compelling story telling.

Unlike other games, Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway brings you into the action making it feel like more than a simple game, it becomes a believable journey into the heart of a war. Hell's Highway is as close to an authentic WWII experience you can have and still make the game fun. The storyline is thoughtful tale of camaraderie between soldiers on the battlefield fighting in a war most of them don’t fully understand. Engaging and gritty Hell’s Highway grabs you throwing you into its world filled with intense squad-based combat situations and horrific moments of human truth.

We probably can’t change the minds of the former, but those of you who haven’t enjoyed the series in the past aren’t alone – because we didn’t either. Hell’s Highway, however, is a different beast – the heritage of the series remains, as do the basic tactical systems, but this time Gearbox has combined the unique gameplay with an extremely robust shooter.

So sure, given our love for this series, we’d definitely hoped to be able to give Hell’s Highway a higher score. But the successes massively outweigh the mistakes here — which, strangely enough, is exactly how we’d describe Matt Baker, the games’ troubled hero. Props to Brothers in Arms for showing us how war can be hell…and fun, too.

Overall I have really enjoyed my time with this title. Everyone is aware of the numerous delays this title faced prior to release, however, the wait seems to have been worth it. The only complaint I have about the game is the frame rate seems to dip briefly at times. It doesn’t happen a whole lot and it only lasts for a couple of seconds, but it is noticeable. With this type of game it would have also been amazing if we could have gone through the campaign with friends over Xbox Live. If you are a shooter fan and you don’t mind going through World War II again be sure to definitely give this game a try. Even if you have grown tired of World War II be sure to give this game a try as the whole squad mentality does tend to change things up a bit. It is an enjoyable title that every fan of the genre should experience.

Other than that, Brother’s in Arms Hell’s Highway is a beautiful and engrossing cinematic experience that is as much fun to watch, as it is to play. Games rarely are this enjoyable and I can't remember the last time I started up a game and couldn't stop playing it.

It takes a lot of talent to take something old and make it new, and when visiting territory that’s as well travelled as Europe in the second world war, you really have to stand out from the crowd to knock a player’s socks off. Brothers In Arms: Hell’s Highway does this with pure polish, and is the most cinematic, strategic and yet playable wargame to come along in a few years. Whether you’re a history enthusiast that wants to play authentically recreated engagements of significant events in Holland following September 17, 1944, or whether you’re looking for a strong single player story-based shooter to loose yourself in for a week, or if you’re up for a squad-based combat game with some genuinely intelligent enemies to fight, this is definitely your bag. Pick up your rifle, get in line, and get into the fight.

Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway does an fantastic job of bringing all the intensity of war to your Xbox with a great blend of FPS action and tactical leadership, all the while creating and weaving an emotional tale of comradery that only a group of men thrust into the horrors of war can share. It might not be the prettiest WWII game ever made but war isn’t supposed to be pretty. The story and gameplay cannot be beat and that’s what counts.

Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway is a nice addition to the series. The new gameplay elements and the added details have made a very solid and interesting game. The cut-scenes developing the story are very well done which gives a cinematic touch to the whole experience. BIA proves that games based on WWII can still be fun to play and the genre is not dead, and it is very good news for the rival Activision with its next Call of Duty title. But at the end, there's nothing beautiful about war itself.

Luckily these faults do not mar the greatness of the squad based single player campaign. The strategic focused combat is unique to this game, and rarely do squad based games ever achieve this level of quality. Due to Brothers in Arms: Hell’s Highway unrivaled combat, its experience should be witnessed by anyone who enjoys shooters requiring some degree of tactics and skill. There are plenty of battles to fight through, collectibles to discover, and techniques to perfect in Hell’s Highway, and I fully recommend purchasing.

A solid single player core story and polished gameplay with some viscereal battles, visuals and stirring music make up the whole package. Multiplayer feels a bit of a let down but if you want something standard in that area then the game delivers.

Overall, Brother In Arms: Hell’s Highway is a great addition to the PS3 library – and is definitely a solid holiday option for FPS fans and WWII buffs alike.

While there were a few graphical issues within the game, World War 2 has never been told with such passion and quality that Brothers in Arms Hells Highway delivers with a well written script and an emotional punch line, Hells Highway is certainly not one to be overlooked.

If you fall into either aforementioned group and you can give the game more than just a cursory play, you will adapt to the controls and find yourself mesmerised by World War II shooters all over again. If having to relearn how you play a console shooter isn’t worth the time for you, skip Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway – but be warned… You’re missing out on one of the more atmospheric shooters of the year.

PlayStation 3Gameplanet (Nov 03, 2008)
Overall, Hell’s Highway is a fantastic shooter. Considering the sheer number of WWII shooters on the market, it does an exceptional job of putting its nose ahead of the rest. Despite the lack of a decent multiplayer, this is a clear favourite in the single-player space - we were actually quite glad to have a shooter from this era after a considerable dry period. If you're a fan of shooters, or of the WWII genre, this is one not to be passed up for the epic story-telling, great graphics and excellent playing style.

What is certain now is that Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway is another rousing entry in a great series. The beautiful landscapes complement the gritty combat, and thoughtful cinematic techniques breathe life into the engaging characters. Despite the somewhat spotty story and sundry oddities, Hell's Highway is a game you should consider playing twice. The unlockable "authentic" difficulty mode removes all the heads-up display elements and really allows the visual design to shine. The story resonates more powerfully because you know the characters well, and the renewed challenge ratchets up the intensity. With so many exciting elements, Hell's Highway provides ample motivation to don the Allied uniform once more.

I present a question to you, dear reader. If you’re sick of World War II shooters, then that must mean you saw some value in the genre at some point. In that case, I implore you to give Hell’s Highway a try. A thinking man’s shooter, it just might rejuvenate your interest in the World War II genre. At worst, it will give you a good story and gameplay, not to mention a hefty challenge along the way.

PlayStation 3UGO (UnderGroundOnline) (Sep 23, 2008)
In terms of the gameplay, the only real missteps Hell’s Highway makes come in the rare moments when Baker is left to go it alone (mentioned above) or when players are forced to take control of a Sherman tank. The driving controls for the lumbering war machine are far from optimized, with the controls always centering on the direction the main gun is facing rather than the left and right analog sticks controlling tank and main gun direction independently, both relative to the camera.

Hell's Highway is a polished, coherent experience that, despite a few setbacks, remains compelling with interesting mechanics and compelling gameplay. It's also easy to appreciate the respect and authenticity of the game's approach. If you're willing to dig in and weather the difficulty, the journey down this most dreaded road is one worth taking.

It's definitely worth picking up for not only shooter fans, but those that enjoy a little bit of strategy with their action. You won't get away with run and gun tactics on this title, and it's easily one of the better representations of squad based combat I've seen in a game since the original Brothers In Arms. Gearbox has made the transition to 360/PS3 quite well, and it definitely gives me hope that we'll see some more great titles from these guys in the next few years.

WindowsGame Captain (Oct 24, 2008)

Regardless, developer Gearbox Software is sending gamers back to Staff Sergeant Matt Baker’s World War II in Brothers in Arms: Hell’s Highway, published by Ubisoft. Set against the backdrop of Market Garden, the game follows Baker and his comrades in the 101st Airborne Division as they push forward against German forces in a variety of familiar settings. Equal parts Medal of Honor and Company of Heroes with liberal sprinklings of HBO’s Band of Brothers thrown in to strengthen the narrative, Hell’s Highway has finally emerged from its extended development as what is easily the best entry in Gearbox’s long-running tactical FPS series.

WindowsTotal PC Gaming (Oct 10, 2008)
However, Hell’s Highway is very accessible and does have broad appeal. BIA fans will find it an improvement over the last instalment, and anyone that hasn’t played the series before could easily weather the linear play and find it a very refreshing change from the glut of stock first-person shooters currently available. Either way, Brothers In Arms: Hell’s Highway is a great time sink for anyone who enjoys a tactical, squad-based first-person shooter.

PlayStation 3Gamer 2.0 (Oct 01, 2008)
In conclusion, Hell’s Highway has plenty of flaws. There are a couple gameplay hitches and unresolved bugs, and multiplayer could use some more polish. The fantastic storytelling coupled with an equally impressive score though will make you forget your grievances with the finished product, and there are just enough extras in the campaign to make completionists return a couple times to get them all. Overall, Brothers in Arms: Hell’s Highway is $60 well spent.

Xbox 360GameZone (Sep 29, 2008)
Great storytelling aside, Hell’s Highway is an utterly gripping and action-packed jaunt into the hellish frontlines that might not be executed as well as it should be but is still worthy of playing. Its glitches and somewhat unspectacular visuals actually keep this from being a brilliant game but it doesn’t hold it back from being fun either. Take a trip down this highway … you will definitely enjoy it.

PlayStation 3Worth Playing (Oct 07, 2008)
Operation Market Garden may have failed to end the war early for the Allies, but Gearbox's newest entry in its Brothers in Arms series largely succeeds in delivering a gritty story in recounting the struggle through the eyes of its characters. Unfortunately, the rough edges can occasionally dampen the otherwise entertaining gameplay, and multiplayer issues keep this title a strictly solo experience over the 10 hours that it will take to complete it. The toll for traveling down Hell's Highway can still be worth the gamble for fans of the genre or as a worthwhile companion to your "Band of Brothers" DVD box set. Unless you're sick of WWII games in general, this tour of duty could be the weekend pass you've been waiting for.

Xbox 360TeamXbox (Sep 23, 2008)
When it comes down to it, BiA handles its portrayal of the WWII adventure differently than other series, such as Call of Duty and Medal of Honor. It’s more story-driven and -focused, which might not be as satisfying or challenging for hard-core gamers looking for constant, fast-paced action—and if you don’t like that kind of game, it’s a good bet you won’t like the next BiA that’s surely coming.

Windows2404.org PC Gaming (Nov 03, 2008)
Clocking in at around 10 hours, Hell’s Highway provides tons of drama but brings with it some new gameplay elements that don’t mesh with the series philosophy. Admittedly as a straight shooter, Hell’s Highway is competent – and sometimes great – in this regard. Most of my problems stemmed from how Hell’s Highway was drifting toward something more shooter-centric, because that wasn’t what the series was always about. Seeing Hell’s Highway as just another, well, game, it’s a well-built shooter with some interesting squad mechanics that are useful from time to time. Now that Baker’s story is reaching the tail-end of the war, it’ll be interesting to see how the dramatic shift in setting will affect the next game. Until then, any fan of the series should pick up Hell’s Highway without hesitation, even if the gameplay won’t play out as expected.

As a solo game Brothers In Arms: Hell’s Highway is amazing. The game has one of the best first-person shooters in the World War II genre. Online play is a problem, along with the framerate problems the game, mainly during cutscenes. Overall I think this is a great game, WW II nuts should defiantly pick this one up immediately.

Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway offers a solid WW2 shooter which has a superbly atmospheric single player mode, which is let down by some sloppy gameplay sections and a last-minute hack at multiplayer. That said, it's a very good game, and one that I'd recommend, particularly if you enjoy the odd first person shooter.

Hell’s Highway is a strong and compelling entry in the Brothers in Arms series but it’s also a slightly flawed sequel that could have been so much better on the PS3. The game itself might also turn people off with it’s realistic combat, so I definitely recommend everyone rent it before a purchase, but that doesn’t detract from the game’s achievements. Bar the jarring Action Camera, there's not a lot wrong with Hell's Highway. Rather, there's a lot good with it. It's an intelligent game made by adults for adults. It'll have a hard time going up against Treyarch's Call of Duty: World at War this Christmas, of course. But, like Sergeant Baker himself, it's going to put up a damn good fight.

Although it doesn't quite measure up to the games that came before it, Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway is still one of the best WW2 shooters in quite some time. While there are some definite issues, the single-player game is a lot of fun and the story is engaging (though it could be a bit confusing to new players). Unfortunately, we were a bit let down by the multiplayer, which wasn't as good as it was in the previous games. Still, this is a game that fans of the series should definitely check out, as well as anyone looking for a unique take on the WW2 genre.

PlayStation 3Game Over Online (Oct 08, 2008)
Brothers in Arms: Hell’s Highway is more than just a first-person shooter. With an emphasis on squad-based tactics, it’s equally a strategy game. It’s a little rough around the edges and multiplayer is generally forgettable, but with a poignant story, believable characters, and intense and varied battle scenes, it’s a single player experience well worth enlisting in, even if you think you’ve had enough of World War II.

Once you get past that initial inclination to just run in with smoking guns and barrels, Brothers in Arms: Hells Highway offers up a great experience and stands as a solid game. While it lacks the graphical finesse and multiplayer modes of its peers, Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway outshines them with a brutally honest portrayal of war and one that you won't forget. Although a few bugs detract from the experience, it excels where it should, creating an atmosphere where its core gameplay mechanics can shine. For fans of the series and tactical shooters in general, this is a welcome addition and one that's been well worth waiting for.

The game itself might also turn people off with it’s realistic combat, so I definitely recommend everyone rent it before a purchase, but that doesn’t detract from the game’s achievements. When I say “Rent it” that isn’t just a recommendation, it’s an order, soldier. Give it a try; your country depends on it.

For gamers, looking for a tactical experience then, games like Rainbow Six Vegas and GRAW still offer the best moments on Xbox 360, but as an addition to their ranks, BIA: HH is certainly worthy of a place on the roster. If you like story driven shooters with a tactical edge then I’d say this game is well worth a look in, however if you are after a long experience that you’ll savour for years to come, then I doubt this game is going to offer you that.

Replay value is immense too, thanks to open tactics, large maps and good Xbox Live modes including Co-op. Far closer to Rainbow Six than Call of Duty, know what to expect and Hell's Highway will be a road trip you'll be on for a very long time.

Hell’s Highway is a welcomed addition to the series, bringing some fine new elements to the series’ successful blend of compelling narrative and squad-based gameplay. While there are some problems, including spotty AI and rough squad controls, the game is still a solid title for fans of WWII shooters.

But, eventually, even the most hardened Brothers In Arms fanboys out there will more than likely get the feeling that this belated entry should have strived for so much more than this. Imagine wider battlefields, less constrained mechanics, a more comprehensive variety of commands... Brothers In Arms: Hell's Highway could have aimed for the stars; instead it chose to simply shuffle its feet and stare fixedly at the floor. And that, despite what Sergeant Baker may claim, is the biggest tragedy of all.

Xbox 360Console Monster (Oct 03, 2008)
So, if you are looking for your next WWII fix, you could do a lot worse. Despite a few issues, BIA:HH is still fun to play, and the squad based gameplay makes a nice change from the mass of run and gun WWII shooters. At the very least it is worthy of a rental, if only to see how storytelling should be done in a game.

Xbox 360Xbox World Australia (XWA) (Oct 06, 2008)
Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway is a great sequel to an already rock-solid franchise. The squad dynamic and focus on tactics help it stand out from an overcrowded genre, and the story is well told and the action befitting of a HBO mini-series. It isn't perfect of course, with some niggling visual issues as well as with the cover system and controls, but these issues are easily overcome if you're a fan of the genre. Hell's Highway looks and sounds tops, plays well, and if they'd thrown in campaign co-op, it could've easily been a contender for best shooter of 2008.

WindowsIGN (Oct 07, 2008)
The Airborne soldiers that fought and lived through the horrors of World War II, and particularly that Operation Market Garden deserve respect, honor, and tales that highlight their sacrifices on the field of battle (as all soldiers do). Brothers In Arms: Hell's Highway does an excellent job of presenting the story of these men, and is as compelling as many war movies. While many of the franchise's traditional gameplay elements return, such as the tactical controls of squads, so do the issues associated with those controls. While the visuals are better, it still has a number of AI issues, making a title that's good, and even better than its console brethren, but not great.

Although war is hell, it has long been recognised as the prime setting to explore the frailties and triumphs of the human condition. But it also a good setting to rack up an enormous body count and blow stuff up - which is also good. Brothers in Arms: Hell’s Highway ultimately is very satisfying on both counts, managing to deliver an emotional story and a big body count with lots of explosions.

Brothers in Arms: Hell’s Highway is a mixed attempt at something different for a war game. On the one hand, it’s a colossal failure as a storytelling vehicle, and merely serves to restate what has already been said in much better ways many times before. On the other hand, it’s a fascinating and ever-so-slightly morbid look at how battles are won and lost in the heat of the moment with tactics devised on the fly.

Had Hell's Highway released closer to its debut behind closed doors, Ubisoft would have clearly had a must-own title on its hands. With the game in development for so long, we had high hopes for it, even though we've been very public about our tiring of WWII shooters. After all, with that much time to polish the squad mechanics, AI and gameplay nuances, Gearbox would certainly have it nailed. Instead, Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway feels like Gearbox got distracted somehow, letting some things drop through the cracks or, worse yet, tinkering with them too much simply because they had so much time to do so. Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway is a perfectly capable shooter, but even though its historical detail is nothing short of astounding, the gameplay itself doesn't do enough to justify a purchase in a fourth quarter filled with higher-profile shooters.

Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway is home to some of the best voice acting this generation. The story will endear you to sergeant Baker as you travel with him into his failed mission. It speaks volumes that the story is enough to convince you to overlook some of the games' glaring technical failures. The squad based gameplay is otherwise what you would expect from one of the better WWII franchises. The feeling of watching your team pull off a precisely ordered flank and flush maneuver is still as rewarding as ever, and something that most WWII games can't match.

Basically Hell’s Highway is a great example of a World War II shooter that isn’t just about running around and blasting Nazis. The squad command system makes for plenty of tactical thinking as you outmaneuver your enemy, and though the cover system has its flaws it still comes through in the end. Though the multiplayer is utterly forgettable the single player campaign makes up for it, making you the star in a quite epic tale of war and brotherhood.

In all honesty, perhaps you're better off renting this game, just like any other slightly-above-average shooter. The single-player campaign is reasonably lengthy, offering a range of challenging tasks in a number of different areas. But thanks to several AI flaws, repetitive mission structure, chances are you'll get a bit fed up with the whole thing before completing the main story. In addition, the ver features a single CTF-style mode, which is hardly worth your time.

A good solo experience that is slightly held back by too much emphasis on the older games, a few other niggles also start to grate after a while and the whole game just doesn’t last long enough. It’s a good starting point for the franchise on the 360 though but it’s not going to displace the likes of COD 4 any time soon.

PlayStation 3PSX Extreme (Nov 12, 2008)
Brothers in Arms: Hell’s Highway is a decent WWII FPS that fails to separate itself from the pack but still offers some relatively accessible and somewhat realistic entertainment. Issuing commands to your squads couldn’t be easier, your allies are effective (for the most part), movement and control is fine if a tad slow at times, and the emphasis on timing, tactics and patience makes for a satisfying experience. However, the enemy’s sharpshooting, quirky AI that can make certain encounters comical, technical hitches that mar the playback, and a rather disjointed story drag the game down. There are many options out there that are better but maybe if you’re a war buff, you can forgive the shortcomings. Otherwise, we can’t recommend dropping $60 for a game that just comes across as, hearkening back to the intro, incomplete.

It's best to think of Hell's Highway as a chapter in a larger series - not only in terms of storyline, but also in terms of gameplay. There's not a lot different here from previous installments and while it's not a bad formula to fall back on, there's so much more that Gearbox could do with the series and its strategic FPS gameplay. Hopefully the next game - what's next, Battle of the Bulge? - will be more ambitious.

WindowsWorth Playing (Jan 06, 2009)
All told, Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway is not a great game, but it's not terrible either, though it certainly has its share of flaws. There are some technical problems and crash bugs that need ironed out (especially for ATI users, from the sound of it), and the feel and responsiveness of the controls could have been better. The AI is lacking, but those special slow-motion moments when you score a particularly nasty headshot or a grenade blows a guy into thirds are rewarding and add to the cinematic feel. It's a poignant story hampered with some aging gameplay mechanics. In an already crowded genre, the gimmicks and familiarities are really only going to appeal to series stalwarts. Unfortunately for the Brothers in Arms saga, there are better, more polished games to be had out there right now, and it may get forgotten for not being all that it could be.

PlayStation 3Playstation Illustrated (Oct, 2008)
Once you have adjusted to all of the little nuances that plague Brothers In Arms: Hell's Highway, there is some enjoyment to be had. There are more than a few exciting moments, and the storytelling in the latter half is excellent. It is just too bad that it suffered from a notorious development process that held it back from greatness on last gen systems because ultimately, that is the way it is. It is a last gen game repurposed for next gen consoles.

PlayStation 3GameDaily (Sep 29, 2008)
In its defense, Brothers in Arms' story, shooting and squad-based mechanics are good enough to overcome these issues, making it one of the most immersive WWII games we've played. The story mode isn't long, but the writing and visuals are so good that it's impossible to not feel something for the pain its characters experience. Hell's Highway is one of the few quality games that we never saw coming, and we recommend that you experience it.

Weirdly, despite the fact that the game is either broken or unpolished in a variety of areas, I sort of enjoyed Gears of WWII. It doesn’t do what it says on the tin, doesn’t break any barriers and is mildly dull as often as interesting but when you’re in the middle of crossfires, your squads do what they’re told and you know that you’re about to blow up a whole mess of Nazis, it’s pretty good. But never great.

PlayStation 3DarkZero (Oct 06, 2008)
All in all, the best way to describe BiA: Hell’s Highway is that it’s a nice evolution of its predecessor rather than been a true revolution of the developers efforts from last gen. In places you’ll probably wish Gearbox could have done more to make the game a true must have, but for the most part it is quite interesting. Furthermore, because of game taking place during Operation Market Garden, in the later stages of World War II you at least have another setting to amuse yourself with this time round - which is a nice plus. At the very least you have to respect the game simply due to it being a perfectly playable World War II shooter in a market that is still absolutely saturated, that in itself is quite the accomplishment.

At this point, Brothers In Arms: Hell's Highway represents little more than a solid evolution of the original, as opposed to being the game which takes strategic World War II action to dizzy new heights. With an engaging but ultimately repetitive play mechanic at its core, it deserves a decent amount of respect, but its charms wane rather than grow as it progresses. With little more than a rooftop sniper interlude and a trio of tank driving segments to break up the flow, Hell's Highway is short on surprises after the first few hours. It's by no means a failure, but simply lacks the inspiration to make it a must-have.

Overall Brothers In Arms is a game that had all the groundbreaking ideas, however having taken so long to have been released it has missed the boat slightly. Pretty much everything that Brothers In Arms does has been done elsewhere and sometimes better. That said it is still a good solid game, just because it doesn’t break any new ground isn’t too much of a problem as everything is done well enough for the old to feel comforting.

Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway takes a good shot at the next-gen FPS with its squad commanding elements and its unique surpassing system - but like any relationship after the honeymoon period is over you start to spot faults. The tedium of what makes this game good in the first place makes it somewhat of a charlatan, but so long as routine and predictability is the in-thing, you'll be okay. It's a good game to keep you occupied until something better comes along; perhaps Hell's Highway is the passage, the tunnel, Hades' route to our the next FPS saviour, Call of Duty: World at War...

Hell's Highway is a fun game. And it's better than most releases around at the moment. But if you want a new shooter and feel particularly drawn to something from Ubisoft, your money is better directed to Far Cry 2 than this particular game. Another Brothers In Arms game would be welcome. But two things need to happen. One they shouldn't take so long to release it next time. And two, the player needs to be given much more freedom.

All in all, considering that the overall gameplay mechanic is a rinse and repeat exercise of duck and cover shooting coupled with a partially fractured command interface, it's hard to recommend Brothers In Arms: Hell's Highway to anyone other than hardened series fanatics. Regardless of multiple squad controls, when factoring in strictly linear objectives, shallow level designs, disappointing visuals, and a whole host of glitches, Hell's Highway ultimately adds nothing other than a gimmicky gore element to the Brothers in Arms franchise.

Fans of the series shouldn’t be disappointed by what Gearbox has done with Hell’s Highway. The focus for these titles has always been on the single-player campaign, plot, and characters, and all these things come together quite nicely. The player will find that Hell’s Highway offers an enjoyable experience from start to finish despite it’s less than perfect execution. While the multiplayer has potential, in its current state it has far too many issues to be a consistently fun endeavor. Therefore, if you’re planning on seeing the Brothers in Arms story through to the end, Hell’s Highway is a must buy. If you’re a newcomer to the series, it’s recommended that you play the first two before delving into this one, as you’ll miss out on the developed story up to that point. If you’re looking for a new World War II multiplayer experience, it would be best to skip over Hell’s Highway and wait for something a little more multiplayer-oriented.

Brothers in Arms seems to wish they were cool enough to eat lunch with Band of Brothers and ends up taking itself all too seriously. It is an earnest backdrop for a game in which the "fun part" is supposed to be blowing people into tiny bits. The story is still pretty compelling and the game handles the material well enough, but technical aspects drag down the glory. World War II is not unexplored territory, and Hell's Highway's innovations are too unsuccessful to be working over the same turf.

It's an accurate cliché to say that if you still enjoy World War II-era games, then Hell's Highway will entertain. The game is an intense shooting gallery, despite the repetition, yet the set-up, landscape, and gameplay feel so familiar at this point that it borders on boring. The whack-a-nazi focus doesn't help matters, though in all fairness, the cover system is excellently realized. Overall, Brothers in Arms is a good example of a genre that simply feels past its prime.

We've been waiting two years longer than we expected for Hell's Highway and the wait has bought little reward. The gameplay hasn't advanced much since the original games from 2005 and the few changes that have been made are detrimental to the original formula. With two-dimensional AI, wearisome level scripting, and a distinct lack of variation throughout, Hell's Highway just can't cut the mustard in 2008.

It's more than slightly ironic that a company rooted in creating Half-Life add-ons—a game that made almost all its cinematic moments part of the actual gameplay—has chosen to make so much of this game non-interactive. Thankfully, the writing is done well enough to make these characters and situations interesting most of the time.

PlayStation 3Game Revolution (Oct 03, 2008)
At its heart, Brothers in Arms: Hell’s Highway is a solid squad-based WWII combat game. Your squads do as their told and are even capable of doing some intelligent thinking for themselves. However, the game falters in its basic FPS controls. The core strategy doesn’t change much, and when it does, you sense the game’s weaknesses all the more. If you can’t wait for the next Ghost Recon or Rainbow Six game to get your tactical FPS fix, Hell’s Highway might satisfy your immediate thirst. For the rest of you, go shoot a BB gun at some leftover meatloaf. It’ll be a lot cheaper, more visceral, and hell of a lot more fun.

It can’t capture the nuance of real life, and that’s a problem. Nobody is suggesting that such a marriage of styles and boundary pushing storytelling shouldn’t be attempted in gaming, and in that Hell’s Highway is incredibly brave, but arguably any effort to be both an enjoyable first person shooter and stony-faced anti-war tale is doomed from the outset. Something must be compromised, it’s just a shame that in this case it happens to be the whole package.
