For no apparent reason obvious to the player beyond developer convenience, Konami's first Castlevania game has been re-implemented in Java, replacing the detailed 8-bit graphics with crude hand-drawn stickmen but retaining all other important aspects including level layouts, destructable objects and power-ups, enemy behavior and boss fights. Minor interface conventions relating to weapon switching and jumping have been changed, but beyond those the game plays as a very emaciated (or very cocktail-napkin design-prototype sketch-y) rendition of the original.

The game's homepage features a redrawn reproduction of an iconic still from F. W. Murnau's 1922 film Nosferatu, depicting a vampire's silhouette as it ascends a staircase.
