It's too bad that so many people (that don't have a Saturn) will miss out on this one. Burning Rangers is a clinic on how to make a 3D, 3rd person action title while utilizing as much power a console can muster. It is easily the best, most original action title to hit consoles in 1998. Pick it up IMMEDIATELY...

And on that note, Burning Rangers receives an inevitable thumbs up from the SEGA SATURN MAGAZINE posse. It's certainly not without its faults and doesn't really attain must-have status. But get past the scrappy graphics and the initial shortcomings and you'll discover yet another innovative and unique gaming experience from those lovely Sonic Team chaps. And we couldn't really ask for much more than that, could we?

Anyone with a Saturn should give Burning Rangers a chance. It’s original, stylish, and loads of fun to play. Control and camera issues aside, it serves as an excellent swan sang for one of Sega’s greatest in-house development teams. The price has gone up, but it should still be within range of most collectors, at least for the moment. Sonic Team left the Saturn on a high note, and hopefully we’ll get a chance to revisit Chris, Shou, Lance, and the other rangers someday. I would love another opportunity to live a split second and have goddess on my wings!

Burning Rangers is a rare find now thanks to its popularity among Saturn collectors and the small disc pressing. But if you want a truly great Saturn library, you must track it down. Too short for its own good, Burning Rangers is still a wonderful play. SEGA really should find some way to get this game, and others from the neglected Saturn catalog, into the hands of gamers. And while I'm wishing here, could I please throw out a little pleading for a sequel? The Wii Remote would be perfect for aiming the water from a Burneer Unit.

If you can survive the tepid controls, however, Burning Rangers is a roaring good time. For Saturn fans, it's one of the last good games for a system whose pilot light has all but gone out.

Burning Rangers is a paradox; the underlying gameplay is great, but the graphics suck a lot of life and believability out of the game. In any case, this is the Saturn's last hurrah and warrants a purchase by anyone who considers themselves a Sega fan.

It's a shame how few people got to experience Burning Rangers. Let us rejoice in the fact that sega is making games equally among the current console crop, so that history will not repeat itself.

Overall, Burning Rangers is probably one of the better Saturn games out there and was one of the last and best. Anyone out there who still has their Saturn hooked up should pick this one up. It may be short, but it's oh so sweet.

Mega Fun (Jun, 1998)

The Video Game Critic (Mar 14, 2006)
As the last Saturn title developed by the Sonic Team, Burning Rangers is often mentioned in the same breath as great Saturn exclusives like Nights into Dreams, Panzer Dragoon, and Sega Rally. Having mentally prepared myself for the video game experience of a lifetime, I was initially somewhat disappointed. Although the box boasts about "brilliant 3D graphics", in fact the visuals are excessively pixelated, with visible seams in the scenery and clipping problems galore. Burning Rangers does boast some original gameplay, however, which ultimately won me over.

The Library of the Saturn has just about reached its end with the release of Burning Rangers. And while it's not the virtual fire-fighting experience we had all hoped for, it is a really good Saturn game. Probably the last really good Saturn game, in fact.
