Buzzard Bait
- Buzzard Bait (1983 on TRS-80 CoCo, 1984 on Dragon 32/64)
Description
Buzzard Bait is a single screen shoot'em up where you have to protect the humans from predatory buzzards.
At the beginning of each round, three pairs of buzzards each go into their nests to make sweet love. As soon as they reappear from the nest an egg also emerges, which quickly hatches. After the egg has hatched the parent buzzards swoop down to pick up humans to feed to their young.
The player must protect the humans by shooting the buzzards. When the buzzards manage to pick up a human and feed it to their baby, it will also leave the nest and join the hunt. Sometimes a penguin flies across the screen, first at the top of the screen then the bottom. To avoid the low flying penguin, the player can jump across it which is tricky because then he can crash into a buzzard.
After each round, there is a bonus round where the player can score an extra life. The player must move through a screen filled with penguins while collecting all three parts of the ship to gain an extra life. The penguins are harmless but bumping into them makes the player bounce around like a pinball. At the same time the player must avoid explosive mines which are left by a space ship that randomly appears.

An original, fun, and arcade style game for the PC.
The Good
This game has some really colorful composite mode graphics that are very cool to look at, and with a smooth frame rate, too! Another thing about this game that I really like is the overall gameplay. I have a ton of fun trying to shoot down waves of orange buzzards because of how frantic the action is (especially when a baby buzzard is hatched)! Additionally, the sounds, despite being from the speaker, don't consist of annoying beeps, and they sound good!
The Bad
At the usual cycles that DOSBox runs in (in this case 3000), the game is far too fast, but at 500 cycles, the game runs fine. The other problem that I have with this game is the bonus stage because it's very hard to avoid the ship and its projectiles, and if you hit the flying ship (or its projectiles), a life is taken away instead of being kept! That stage also seems to be a bit lower in terms of the frame rate.
The Bottom Line
If you're looking for an old game that consists of frantic arcade action, this is the game for you! I hope you've got DOSBox!
