Despite the little flaws and frustrating camera angles, I found the game stayed true to the series, and without spoiling it for you, was a fitting end to the trilogy as a whole. This is going to be one of those games that you will either love or hate, and if you are a fan of the series it’s a definite no-brainer. For those of you that are not quite so familiar with the complete story of the trilogy, and just want a good action game, again for me I would have to recommend it. Castlevania Lords Of Shadow 2 is not ground breaking in any way, but it delivers an exhilarating and sometimes unexpected experience that few games have managed of late, and the combat enables it to wash away many of its sins.

Lords of Shadow 2 then, is fun but frustrating, not quite as fantastic as the first game but still worthy of a place in the Castlevania halls of fame. Highly ambitious, engaging and with a combat system that's refined from Lords of Shadow regardless of the personal niggles I might have with it. Making it hub-based with more of a feeling of exploration may have killed some of the impetus the first game had in terms of story. The upgraded difficulty of the combat system, coupled with unblockable attacks by virtually every enemy triggering with a frightening regularity can turn it into a frustrating experience more than a fun one. One thing it doesn't suffer from though is a lack of multiplayer, this game is single player and this is quite refreshing to see a title like Lords of Shadow 2 refrain from shoehorning in some half-arsed PVP style deathmatch. Get the game if you want to see how the story of Gabriel Belmont ends, it's not a terrible game by any long shot.

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 does some things alright and some things really well. The lack of anything not done before and the run of the mill story still leave the game a decent gaming experience, there’s still plenty to see and plenty to kill, and, as mentioned before, there is a great sense of games and level design competency which oozes from the seams. For third person action veterans it probably won’t quite cut the mustard, but for Castlevania fans who are still digging the reboot this will be another good title in the reimagining of a classic series.

Xbox 360God is a Geek (Feb 25, 2014)
Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 is a strange beast. It gives us the narrative conclusion we wanted, but in a sequel we arguably didn’t need. It’s fun enough, but never feels essential, and the fact that it’s let down by its combat – which plays such a huge and vital role – means you may reach the final stretch with little emotional investment to spare. It’s a shame that MercurySteam did so well with Lords of Shadow, but have somehow managed to commit the cardinal sin of sequels by enhancing the original’s flaws rather than eradicating them. Lords of Shadow 2 is still worthy of bearing the Castlevania name, but only just – and without some serious repair work, it might already be time to lay the rebooted franchise to rest once and for all.

On the whole Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 is a game that does the basics well enough, without ever really setting itself apart. It is a nice conclusion to the first game but nothing more, nothing less. Worth picking up if you enjoyed the original, but hardly essential at the same time.

Lords of Shadow 2 may have gained an open world, but a poor story, uninteresting enemies, and a bland cast of characters came with it. Combat might be improved, but forced stealth sections cause nothing but dismay and frustration. The end result is something that doesn’t come near the level of overall quality found in the original Castlevania: Lords of Shadow.

Xbox 360ZTGameDomain (Feb 26, 2014)
Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 has been one of my most anticipated games for a while now. It is sad to see the series end on such a low note. There is still a good action game buried in here, and the storytelling was much more prevalent this time around. Sadly, the need to add in stealth sections and boring environments drag down what made the original so unique and memorable. Lords of Shadow 2 is worth playing through if for nothing more than to get closure to the series, but it is easily the weakest of the three Mercury Steam entries to the franchise.

WindowsLazygamer (Mar 03, 2014)
Underneath the unfocused, ramshackle design decisions and incomprehensible story there's a decent action game - but how much of it you're willing to endure for closure depends on how deeply entrenched you are into Lords of Shadow's lore.

WindowsDarkZero (Mar 03, 2014)
Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 is a good game with a satisfying conclusion to the MercurySteam saga that sadly falls short of its predecessor, thanks to the puzzling inclusion of unwanted stealth elements. These don’t completely derail the game due to their shortness, but there’s enough to disrupt the flow of the game and irritate the player. The rest of Lords of Shadow 2 is made up of great action, some lovely locales and somewhat of a decent attempt at a more metroidvania focused 3D Castlevania. It’s a shame that you need some tolerance to stick with the game to get past its faults and slow start to get to the chunk where the game is gratifying, peaking close to what made the first Lords of Shadow a great game.

WindowsAusGamers (Feb 27, 2014)
It’s a tragedy to see Lords of Shadows 2 arrive in this form. Rather than focus on what made the first game so much fun, the designers seem to have totally misunderstood what gamers wanted from the sequel, and delivered something that was utterly alien to the first game. The satisfying combat might be enough for some; it’s just a pity that it always takes place in such boring environments. It’s likely that this will be the death of the series as we know it, which would be a real shame; if an unlikely sequel is announced, I hope the developers look to the first Lord of Shadows for inspiration, and not the latest incarnation.

WindowsThe Escapist (Feb 27, 2014)
Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 looks gorgeous and could have been wildly original, but it squanders its polish and potential on archaic contrivances, banal writing, and an overall shallow experience. It's fine if you want a factory standard combat game, but in the year 2014, it's just plain dreary.

WindowsThunderbolt Games (Mar 14, 2014)
This terrible boss fight is the crowning failure of a sequel that matches its predecessor in a few select areas but takes a gigantic step back in every other way. If the rumours about its troubled development are true then it’s an accomplishment that it’s not the trainwreck it could have been. As it is, it’s aimless, misguided and incredibly disappointing for those who found the first Lords of Shadow such a refreshing surprise. There’s some fun to be had with certain aspects but otherwise this is a complete misfire in almost every direction. Fans might get something out of a weekend rental or an incredibly cheap binge purchase in future Steam sales, but otherwise I wouldn’t recommend Lords of Shadow 2 to anyone. An unfortunate conclusion to a once promising trilogy.
