Chopper Command has stood the test of time. Only recently did I come to realize just how challenging this game is. Even on the normal skill level it;s difficult to last very long. Every 2600 fan should have a copy of Chopper Command in their library.
Atari 2600Woodgrain Wonderland (Oct 29, 2016)
Chopper Command will kick your ass six ways from Sunday but it’s a real hoot.
Atari 2600The Atari Times (Apr 19, 2003)
Still, if you're not happy with the 2600 version of Defender and you don't want to seek out the superior, but rarer, Stargate, the very common Chopper Command might very be one to add to your collection. Heck, if you just want a good shooter for the 2600 that will test your reflexes, this game won't disappoint you at all.
Atari 2600Hey Poor Player (Oct 11, 2016)
Graphically Chopper Command is really nice with its clearly defined flicker free sprites and it’s always nice to see that trademark Activision sunset on display. Even though everything moves around a pretty rapid pace, the humble 2600 manages to keep up with it all really well. The sound consists of lots of loud and proud sound effects that are exactly what you want to hear in a game like this. Gameplay wise this is certainly a much better game than Atari’s conversion of the original Defender, but just short of the 2600 port of the brilliant sequel Stargate (also known as Defender II). That said, even if you already own Stargate, this is a really good game that is right up there with the best horizontally scrolling shoot ‘em ups the system has to offer.

Atari 2600Atari HQ (2002)
Visually appealing, full of action, fast-paced but somewhat lacking in originality, Chopper Command is an above-average 2600 game.
Atari 2600Game Freaks 365 (2002)
Despite boasting two difficulty levels and the possibility of alternating multiplayer (both of which are determined using the game select switch), I cannot wholeheartedly recommend this game. It will be fun for a while, but its lasting value is somewhat limited compared to some other Atari 2600 titles. If you are a fan of Defender though, this game should be worth at least looking into.
Atari 2600Press Play On Tape (Jan 12, 2022)
Atari 2600Retro Game Reviews (Apr 15, 2015)
There's definitely some fun to be had with Chopper Command and it's by no means a bad game. Personally it just didn't hold my interest but fans of Defender (1981, Arcades) might get some enjoyment out of it.
Atari 2600Le Geek (May, 2008)
So I recommend Chopper Command only half heartedly. Many people seem to love it though, so your mileage may vary.
Atari 2600Digital Press - Classic Video Games (Sep 25, 2004)
For what it is, "Chopper Command" is enjoyable in short bursts. Getting into a zone and wiping out entire fleets of enemy aircraft is fun, but only if you can pull it off. It will only take one time for someone to slam into an enemy jet helplessly before they reach for the cart and yank it out. Stick with "Defender."
