Short, but sweeter than a pack of cigs and a clean pair of undies.

WindowsJust Adventure (Dec 21, 2004)
The only caveat I can offer is that this game is definitely for adults. It’s grim, violent, even sadistic at times. There is one sequence, for example, during which after knocking foes out, it is required that you literally stomp on their unconscious bodies until they’re dead. (I just pretended they were each Linda Tripp or Rosie Perez.) The game’s language is appropriately salty as well, with use of The F Word even (amusingly, I thought) in the tutorial!

What you've got here is a game that doesn't have a lot of high impact hype surrounding it, but it's just as good, if not better, than most FPS shooters available. Doom 3 can't even touch the class that exudes from this Director's Cut. If you have a PC that can handle it - even the high end ones might experience a hiccup in framerate or two - then I demand that you play it, even if you've played the Xbox version. Hats off to Diesel himself who had a hand in the development and to Starbreeze who are destined to create great things to come.
XboxGamePro (US) (Jun 11, 2004)
You may not have seen Pitch Black or you may not think too warmly of Vin Diesel as an actor, but none of that matters. The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay stands comfortably alongside Halo and Splinter Cell as one of the Xbox?s best games.
95 (Aug 11, 2004)
To conclude, The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay sets new standards in gaming. It turns around the annoying truth of movie based games always being a let down & accurately gels the two media types into an experience never seen before. If you have an Xbox you need to own this game.
XboxGame Informer Magazine (Jul, 2004)
The tiny flaws in the visuals are a great analogy for this title as a whole. While excellent, Escape from Butcher Bay could have been a bit better. Since the main quest is short (I beat it in less than 15 hours) and there is no multiplayer, it's not a ton of game for your money. Had it included any additional modes of gameplay, Riddick might have been the absolute best title for the Xbox. But as it is, Escape from Butcher Bay is one title that every Xbox owner simply must buy. It's that good.
XboxGame Chronicles (Jul 13, 2004)
The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay is a wonderful mix of action and stealth. It’s got more action than Splinter Cell and plays better than Breakdown, plus you have the character of Riddick, crass, egotistical, and tough as nails. He’s a villain cast into a world of even worse villains ultimately making him the unlikely hero he is destined to become in Pitch Black and the recently release sequel. If the gameplay isn’t enough to grab you then the audio and visual presentation will certainly make this a showcase title for your Xbox collection, one that will wow your friends. It’s a definite must-have addition to any Xbox gamer’s library.

WindowsGame Watcher (Mar 25, 2005)
The only minor setback apart from the lack of multiplayer is that there aren’t too many different enemies and weapons in CoR. You will mostly be killing the prison guards. But it’s really almost not worth mentioning as all the characters and weapons that appear are truly rich and detailed. Nothing really has any value when standing against such a warm and inspirational game. If I ever wrote any review to help anybody decide to buy any game or not then I hope this review will make you walk to the shop and make the purchase.

Christmas is over, you're probably sick to death of Half-Life 2, Doom 3, Pirates! and half a dozen other games that were released in time for the Christmas rush. Why not pick up the best game you never heard of, to keep you busy through the slow, lonely months of January and February? There are very few games I recommend outright to anyone without hesitation. So let me just qualify: if you have any interest in first-person shooters, go get Riddick. Now.

Buy this game. There really isn’t anything more to say than that. Every facet of the gameplay is brilliant, and it’s wrapped in the best looking graphics on the Xbox to date. I’ve used the word ‘immersion’ in this review several times, and really it really is the aspect of Riddick that truly separates it from the pack. The game simply does a phenomenal drop of bringing the player into the game and making them feel as though they are actually experiencing everything on screen. The fact that this game is a based on a movie license and made by an – before the advent of this game – unproven company makes the fact that this is my front runner for game of the year (sorry Ninja Gaiden) even more wonderfully bizarre. As a fan of the Pitch Black universe, playing this game the equivalent of a 6 year old finding a new puppy under the Christmas tree – the sheer joy makes you want to laugh and cry and the same time, but neither is really possible since you’re so out of breath.
WindowsGameSpot (Dec 10, 2004)
The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay is one of those exceedingly rare types of games that delivers exceptionally high quality through and through and single-handedly ups the ante for all similar games. The fact that it also happens to be based on a movie franchise--something that's usually a bad sign for a game--makes it all the more incredible. You could call it a first-person shooter, but that would be selling it short. This ambitious game is played mostly from a first-person perspective, and it effectively and innovatively combines excellent shooting, hand-to-hand combat, stealth, and adventure elements with a solid story and truly outstanding, highly atmospheric graphics and sound.
XboxGameSpot (Jun 01, 2004)
It's easily one of the most-impressive games on the Xbox and seems destined to be remembered as the most inspiring collaboration between Hollywood and the gaming industry yet.
XboxGame Informer Magazine (Jul, 2004)
It's not perfect, but I loved every moment I played Riddick and I highly recommend it. Keep in mind, it's not a first-person shooter - though it can be at times. It's a stealth adventure game at heart, and a very good one at that.

Ist Riddick also besser?
XboxDaily Game (Jun 14, 2004)
What’s most interesting about even this game, though, is that in spite of its being single-player only, we’re just as eager to go back and keep playing. With the exception of a few linear and otherworldly levels (which, by the way, out-Doom Doom), there are enough ways to try to escape from Butcher Bay that it’s hard not to think about playing again. Riddick is an incredibly pleasant surprise, both in its mix of stealth and shooting gameplay and because it’s tied to a movie license. If Riddick is the future of movie-based games, then buy me a one-way ticket, because I’m never coming back.
XboxGaming Target (Jun 08, 2004)
I expected very little of Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay when it first started getting hyped up, but it winds up being one of my favorite games on Xbox so far this year. The whole game compliments each other; the beautiful graphics help out with stealth (as well as paint the urgency of needing to get the hell out of there), as does the sound effects, and the variety in gameplay, and different paths to reach the same goal mean it’s possible to play through this game a second time, to complete sidequests, find hidden cigarettes, and just experience an intense game again. Some people might find it a bit short, and of course, even more will lament at the lack of neither on or offline multiplayer (despite the Live stripe, which only is for Live Aware), but if you can put that aside, this is a great first person stealth/shooter hybrid that lives up to the hype.
XboxGameZone (Jun 04, 2004)
This is a terrific game. If you like action, combat, adventure, then pick this one up. Chronicles of Riddick as enough of each to keep you enthralled and excited.
WindowsGameZone (Dec 28, 2004)
This little gem of a game is brought to us by the kind folks at Starbreeze Studios, a team that ought to be commended for taking a big movie license and making a more-than-respectable game out of it. The Chronicles of Riddick debuted in theatres this year as a sequel to 1999’s Pitch Black – both films giving major screentime to action star Vin Diesel - and Starbreeze’s game, Escape from Butcher Bay, is a prequel to the events in Pitch Black. One doesn’t necessarily need to have seen either movie to appreciate the game, but there are of course allusions to the films that fans will undoubtedly notice.
XboxXBox Front (Jan 24, 2005)
Vin Diesel.
Film-to-game conversions have reached a milestone. Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay is a finely crafted gaming experience that will not soon be duplicated. The action, script and presentation are all worthy of the highest praise. First person fans will have plenty to occupy them until Doom 3 and Halo 2.
WindowsActionTrip (Dec 13, 2004)
In all, Starbreeze did a very good job of porting this game to the PC. If we look past the minor bugs, the combat feels intense and the controls feel perfectly natural. The Chronicles of Riddick just feels right on the PC and it's as if this was a PC game from the get-go. Bottom line is any self-respecting PC shooter fan should play Escape from Butcher Bay: I've enjoyed every minute of the original, just as I'm enjoying the PC iteration. The only downside to it--and this is really something that bugged it and me about the Xbox game as well--is that it offers very little long-term replay value, and leaves things wide open for a sequel, as well as not being very long. But even so, it's still a shooter experience you won't want to miss, trust me.

Last May when I was at the Electronic Entertainment Expo, one of the games that really blew me away was Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay. The graphics looked great, the atmosphere seemed just right, and there was only one downside to the game for me: it was only going to be released on Xbox. However, a couple of months after the original Xbox release, a PC version saw the light and now I was able to step in the shoes of Riddick while being in front of my very own PC. If you want to know whether Riddick is still as cool as he was on Xbox, I suggest you read on.

Regardless of the length of the game though I should point out that what you do get is a perfect addition to the Riddick Universe and it should be noted that in some ways it outperforms Doom 3 for atmosphere and downright scariness. It’s well worth getting especially if you’re a fan of Vin and the whole Riddick mythos, it answers many questions the movies don’t and provides a good insight into the penal system of Riddick’s future.
WindowsJust Games Retro (May 17, 2012)
Escape From Butcher Bay’s reputation as one of the best movie games ever made feels rightfully earned. Like – dare I say – Deus Ex, it’s genre blending at its finest, taking the best parts of each system and making them accessible and smartly integrated. A beautiful engine and some excellent writing and acting don’t hurt either. You’ll need to keep in mind that it’s a stealth game more than it is a shooter, and there will be quiet sections where you won’t be snapping necks or breaking faces, but it’s a great time if you’re prepared to spend some time in Riddick’s shoes.

XboxXbox World Australia (XWA) (Jul 20, 2004)
Chronicles of Riddick : Escape from Butcher Bay isn't an overly difficult or lengthy game and all up it took me no more than about 8-10 hours to get through it. What it offers are next generations visuals as good as we've seen in Doom 3 and Halo 2 screenshots, excellent audio, top production values, a cool story and is excellent fun from start to finish with barely any flat or boring moments. It might be hard to justify spending up to $100 on a game that can be completed in a weekend but if you're a FPS fan then you have to experience this game. The immersion factor is off the chart and is easily the best looking Xbox game yet. Whether you're a Vin Diesel fan or not, this game has to be experienced and is easily a contender for many game of the year awards.

XboxChrist Centered Game Reviews (Jun 01, 2005)
As a game, TCoR is nearly perfect, albeit far to short. But from a Christian perspective, this game could be greatly offensive to you. If you can put up with the violence, etc. then I totally recommend playing this game but just rent it (You can beat it 2 or 3 times in one rental period). But, if you are a parent, in no way should you even think about giving this to a minor, PERIOD. This game draws you in and never stops to let you catch your breath.
XboxGameDaily (Jun 11, 2004)
Those who still question the power of the Xbox take note: The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay is the best looking Xbox box game ever released, but this slick first person shooter isn't all eye candy. It's a pulse-pounding thrill ride full of intense gun play, wrapped within a hot movie license that features superb voice acting (Vin Diesel is perfect), and a cool soundtrack. Though some glitches rear their ugly heads, they don't hamper the gameplay at all, and while its abrupt conclusion is bitter sweet, Butcher Bay is the game of the year candidate gamers have been clamoring for.
XboxGameSpy (Jun 01, 2004)
I'm proud to have beaten the snot out of Butcher Bay, and I've not enjoyed a video game as much as EfBB for quite a long while. Xbox owners should be proud of the fact that EfBB is only available on their system, just as they should try and ignore that fact that the game would have been perfectly suited to Xbox Live in terms of multiplayer action. And, if you haven't already seen Pitch Black, rent it. I advise checking out the new film, too, but gamers simply shouldn't let The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay pass them by. It's simply too good and too tasty to ignore. Not to mention it's the first decent step towards next-next-generation visuals. I'm sure Vin is very proud.

Being greeted with The Chronicles Of Riddick for the first time back at a Vivendi press event in April created the kind of exasperation rarely seen in a sequel/me-too obsessed business where excitement can be in short supply. "Where the hell did this come from?" we all muttered as the best looking Xbox game ever played out in front of our disbelieving eyes. And then to find out the game was practically finished and being released in the US in just a few weeks time - we almost fell off our chairs. How on earth had such a top notch title just fallen from the skies like this? Did Vivendi not realise how obviously superb this was? In an era of bloated five/six-year development projects, to be told this game had been put together quietly in around two years seemed unfathomable. It put things in perspective, that's for sure.
WindowsYahoo! Games (Dec 15, 2004)
Released on the Xbox back in January, Escape from Butcher Bay gathered significantly better reviews than the movie it's based on -- a very unusual phenomenon. The PC version of this action-stealth first-person shooter is even better, thanks to improved graphics and a ton of DVD-style extras. Both a licensed game and a port (a title that's been converted to another platform), it's outstanding and well worth your time.
90 (UK) (Dec 14, 2004)
To anyone who has played The Chronicles Of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay it seems like stating the bleedin' obvious to conclude that it's one of the best five games of the year. A bit short compared to some of the epic games we've played lately, but the ten hours of entertainment packed in are probably as concentrated as we've ever seen. Never a dull moment; rich, constantly varied and surprising, technically excellent, well crafted and feeling somehow more imaginative and forward looking than probably any game sporting a film licence ever. And yet thanks to the film's late summer tanking, nobody cares. Sometimes licences work against games, and here's an example if ever we've seen one.
WindowsGameSpy (Dec 13, 2004)
Wait, wait. I know what you're probably thinking about The Chronicles of Riddick - Escape from Butcher Bay, especially if you didn't pay attention to the Xbox version released earlier this year. Games based on movie licenses are safely ignored by discriminating gamers, I know. That's a good instinct you should go with most of the time, but The Chronicles of Riddick is a rare exception. The folks at Starbreeze Studios based a first-person shooter around a character from a summer popcorn flick, but they also made it a really fun, really polished amalgam of action, RPG, and adventure genres.
90 (Oct 04, 2004)
Games based on movies must be bad… It’s just one of the prejudices I sometimes struggle with. But as with many of them, it’s one that has its groundings in facts. You’ll understand then that I started up my Xbox with some hesitations. However, as you will find out by reading the review, it soon showed that I was wrong questioning the quality of this Vin Diesel game.
WindowsFOK!games (Feb 03, 2005)
WindowsGameSpot (Belgium/Netherlands) (Dec 28, 2004)
WindowsGameplay (Benelux) (Dec 24, 2004)

WindowsIGN (Dec 14, 2004)
When Pitch Black was released in 2000, I loved the vicious alien sci-fi adventure despite its strict adherence to a well-traversed formula of action horror flicks. Who knew the quiet debut of Vin Diesel as the next super bad-ass would kick off an entire universe around its indifferent murderous anti-hero? What's more, certainly nobody expected a knockout first-person shooter starring the now notorious anti-hero to sneak its way into stores and stab the delighted hearts of gamers. Which is exactly why The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay was so well received on the Xbox and has now been transferred over to the PC in good style and with new content.
XboxNext Level Gaming (Jun 14, 2004)
You have to hand it to Vivendi. They know how to take a movie license, and make a good game out of it. And now that I waited to see the movie before reviewing the game, I can also say playing the game will NOT ruin the movie. Nor will it ruin Pitch Black for you. That is a good thing. And by the way, it is Xbox Live Aware so your friends can catch up with you while you're playing it. The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay has only two issues; lower res graphics, and a somewhat short length. Other than that, it's a rush, and a very solid game. I like it. I think you will too.
WindowsPC Action (Dec 23, 2004)
Xbox1UP (Jun 02, 2004)
A lot of first-person shooters take the attitude that more is better: more guns, more levels, more destruction. But The Chronicles of Riddick isn't so convinced of that. Instead, it takes a minimalist approach. There is little text to read through, the overall game doesn't last very long, and there aren't many guns to choose from. But you know what? The game's better for it.
WindowsJolt (UK) (Jan 03, 2005)
Arriving on the Xbox in the middle of last year, Riddick was one of those genuinely pleasant surprises that turn up from time to time. It was a console FPS, and a movie-based one at that, yet it was full of gaming goodness and treated both the subject matter and the audience with the right level of respect. Oh and it had some real fancy graphics, yes indeed. Of course, now that the game has rather stealthily made its way onto the true home of the FPS, we can tell once and for all how it measures up against the rest of the crop.
WindowsPC Games (Germany) (Dec 15, 2004)

WindowsGame Freaks 365 (2004)
Although the system requirements are a little bit high, this really is the game for everyone. It's got the intensity of the best of the FPS genre, and a lot of creativity. If you are a fan of good games, give this game a good look.
XboxIGN (May 28, 2004)
A first-person shooter that blends equal parts blasting, hand-to-hand combat, stealth attacks, and even some platforming into the mix, Riddick takes noticeable risks in a crowded genre and succeeds. From its movie-inspired presentation to its minimalist HUD and the deadpan delivery of Diesel's likeable killer, Riddick is saturated with a sleek kill-or-be-killed atmosphere that pervades all. The combat is sharp, the AI smart and relentless, and the level design deft.

XboxGame Revolution (Jun 04, 2004)
The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay is good for about 12-15 hours of compelling single-player gameplay, but unfortunately there isn't much keeping you coming back for more. A few other difficulty settings are here alongside some unlockable movies and stills and whatnot, but that's not much, and amazingly the game features no multiplayer at all. It's a shame. But despite the fact that The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay is a somewhat short, linear romp with limited replayability, it's about as good as Xbox action gaming gets, from its fantastic delivery to its fun combat. Definitely an escape worth taking.

The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay is good for about 12-15 hours of compelling single-player gameplay, but unfortunately there isn't much keeping you coming back for more. A few other difficulty settings are here alongside some unlockable movies and commentary mode, but that's not much, and amazingly the game features no multiplayer at all. It's a shame. But despite the fact that The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay - Developer's Cut is a somewhat short, linear romp with few enhancements over the Xbox version, it still makes a good addition to any PC game collection with its awesome environments, savage melee combat and smooth pacing. So drop the soap and grab this game.

The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher’s Bay finally eliminates the stereotype that games parallel-marketed with movies are doomed to the ash bin of history. EBB begins its story by showing the player a few in-engine movies that basically tell you two things: Riddick is a classic movie tough-guy with a superpower--glow in the dark vision--who somehow gets captured for a bounty and is presently being delivered to a penal institution on a desert world known as Butcher’s Bay.
XboxConsole Obsession (May 31, 2010)
The Chronicles of Riddick should make other developers take note, and we hope the game has paved the way for other movie tie-ins to follow. The visuals are stunning and the gameplay isn’t too shabby either, if only the game had been that little bit longer and had provided us with some multi-player options, we would have had very few complaints.
WindowsFactornews (Feb 15, 2005)

Riddick is a game that will be passed over by many gamers, expecting it to offer nothing more than under-par console FPS action. While the game is a console port and pretty short, it is an experience to remember and the additions made to the PC version make it a worthwhile purchase for any serious FPS fan.

Riddick is a game that seemingly came from nowhere, but is easily one of the best games available for the Xbox. While the game is short, it is an experience to remember and is a showcase title graphically. Had the game weighed in a little longer it would be easy to recommend as a purchase. Those of you who want a more substantial offering for your money may want to give this a miss, but it should be experience by everyone, even if it is just for a weekend.
Overall, this is a wholly unique shooter with great production values and immersive story. This is easily one of the best movie licensed titles in a long time and will likely be the best one of this console generation. Any fan of first-person shooters needs to play this game and if you enjoy games like Splinter Cell for their stealth gameplay, this is also a must-play. The lack of any real replay value is obviously going to make or break your decision on a purchase though.

Gameplay is a little innovative and more importantly runs very smoothly. The fact that the shooting mechanics are great but not at all overdone, playing an equal or lesser role as other gameplay elements, tells you something about the quality of the game. The only area that falls short is the replay value. The game is short. And while going back to collect packs of cigarettes, which unlocks material from the game and movies, and trying the few alternate paths gives the game a bit of extra life, The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay will be done within 15 hours. Makes for the perfect rental.
XboxGaming Age (2004)
Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay combines elements from many different styles of games in an attempt to please all types of gamers. The end result is a game that is interesting and fun to play but lacks the polish that puts games like Splinter Cell and Halo into the gaming halls of fame.
XboxNetjak (Aug 17, 2004)
The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay could have been a classic in the world of gaming if it had better AI and been quite a bit longer. Unfortunately, like most movie games, parts of it fell short. Overall, the game still presented an entertaining, story driven shooter that is well worth a rental.
XboxBordersdown (2004)
It may be true that Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay takes the lazy option in a number of instances and features a few gameplay discrepancies, however the movie-like production values and occasional inspired sequence carry this enjoyable adventure right through to its satisfying conclusion.
