In the year of 1590, the young William Shakespeare is at the start of his career as a playwright. He aims to join the playing company Lord Strange's Men, and to this end he has been brought under the patronage of Lord Strange himself, Ferdinando Stanley. Alas, Shakespeare is at a crossroads and is unable to make strides in his writing. Ferdinando offers to help and lends him his inquisitive daughter, Anne. With her as audience, Shakespeare may find the right inspiration to finish one of his earlier uncompleted scripts - The Veronese Romance, a play about the impossible love between Romeo and Juliet, members of two feuding families, whose tragic end will resolve a decades-old enmity.

The Chronicles of Shakespeare: Romeo & Juliet is a hidden-object adventure game that recounts an abridged version of William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. Shakespeare himself acts as narrator and is also shown in cutscenes, usually between acts, conversing with Anne or Ferdinando, among others. Several of the original supporting characters and scenes are missing from the game. In different instances, players control either Romeo or Juliet as they navigate through the play's acts. In order to progress, several specific objects must be found in the surrounding environment. Additionally, some puzzles require logical solving, or a timed reaction in one particular case. The protagonists have an inventory as well. The items stored there (not all found objects are) must be used with the environment, e.g. using a key in order to unlock a door.

Historical inaccuracies

Besides the obvious omission of scenes from the original tragedy, the game also features several inaccurate depictions of the era. For example, on one of the tables in the game the player can spot an inkwell with the word Levenger on it. Levenger is indeed a company that produces inkwells, but it was founded in 1987.
