Cloudphobia is a side-scrolling doujin shooter. The player needs to protect a mothership that was attacked by pilot EG-04 Mist while experimenting with the EAM-P Englar prototype aircraft. It has a beam powerful enough to destroy the entire ship and is able to deploy automatic combat aircraft in the surroundings to attack. While the enemy is preparing for a second strike, only three minutes are left to interfere.

On start, the player is asked to enter a name for ranking purposes, and can be changed later on.

In five stages, the player has three minutes per level to destroy the prototype, controlling the PLG-90 robot with a laser ignition rifle or the Núllpunktur wielding a Vibroblade. Both types of robots are available for each level and they play very differently. All levels are set flying in the air and the player needs to engage enemies with regular fire (or a blade with Núllpunktur) and missiles (limited supply). Because of the time restriction, boost needs to be applied regularly to reach the end of the level before it is too late. That way, there are three ways to die: depleting the shield when taking too many hits, letting too many enemies pass causing the mothership to be destroyed or running out of time before the end of the stage.

The settings can be made easier in the options menu, however the player will not be able to submit scores made by these changes to gameplay.

A variety of backgrounds and planes is used, with objects on different layers, many bullets at once and colourful explosions. Different kind of bonuses are available, based on the use of missiles and by destroying the commander of flying formations. Game sessions can be saved and viewed as replays.

Scores and times can be uploaded to an online leaderboard ranking usernames from 1-100, where other players can view replays of the highest scores or fastest times.
