Didn't get enough of March Madness while you had the chance, huh? Now you can plug that college excitement into your Sega Genesis anytime you want with Coach K College Basketball from EA Sports. At first glance the title looks to be an exact replica of NBA Live '95 with the substitution of college teams and players, but there's much more than meets the eye.
GameFan Magazine (Mar, 1995)
As to whether or not owners of NBA Live '95 need to purchase this game; well, I definitely prefer Coach 'K' over it's pro cousin. If you already own NBA, you've got a solid game of basketball and need not go for Coach 'K', unless you're a big college hoops fan. If you haven't purchased either, go for 'K' won't be disappointed.
Based on the NBA Live '95 engine, Coach K Basketball from Electronic Arts does the seemingly impossible by topping the original with a host of new features. Yeah, yous till can't manually reach in for the ball to make a steal like you can on the SNES, but since you can't play the game on the SNES, let's just ignore that one minor shortcoming and get to the good stuff.
GamePro (US) (Apr, 1995)
Adjustable difficulty settings complete Coach K's slam dunk. With seven trips to the tournament semifinals under his belt, Krzyzewski knows his stuff and so does EA Sports - this game takes Dick Vitale's College Hoops to the hole. A great combo of features and gameplay make this freshman cart a winner.
If you've been searching for a great college basketball game to add to your Genesis sports library, you can call off the bloodhounds: Coach K College Basketball is an exciting game that faithfully recreates the special atmosphere of the sport. The game runs off the engine used in NBA Live 95, so you'll enjoy a three-quarter view of the court, large, well-animated players and statistical updates during the game.
The Video Game Critic (Jan 04, 2000)
The crowd sounds like static, and the menu interface is slow and clunky, but at least you can take your team through a whole season and try to move them up the rankings. One cool feature is the ability to make the crowd wave their arms behind the basket during foul shots to distract the shooter. For some reason, players doing lay-ups appear to be holding their nose, and after performing a dunk, players point with their fingers to rub it in. Sometimes you can shatter the backboard, leaving the basket looking like a saggy condom. Actually, that's consistent with the porno music that plays during the option screens. The triplet blonde cheerleaders on the sideline don't have much school spirit - they never cheer! And be sure to check out the imaginative fans holding up letters to spell "T-E-A-M". This is a college basketball game that's as fun to laugh at as it is to play.
Play Time (Apr, 1995)
College Basketball at it's best. Featuring 32 top college teams across the nation plus eight all-time championship teams, this one's the best college basketball game so far. Realistic plays and great animations from the NBA Live engine make this one as real as possible. Awesome backboard-smashin' dunks. Lastly, the multiplayer mode is a blast. Lace up those shoes!
Video Games (Mar, 1995)
