Vandal Online (Nov 06, 2009)

And make no mistake – this is an impressive game from a lot of standpoints. It may have suffered a bit from the lack of hype leading up to its release and some not bad, but not exactly great gunplay, but C.O.P. is one of those games that people will still find themselves gushing about years from now. A few, myself included, could argue that it had out-GTA'd GTA with better mechanics and more realistic gameplay, but all these great points still don't change one thing – I just wasn't excited about or by this game. Was it the crush of all the other AAA titles released at right about the same time? Am I just sick of the cops and robbers formula? Is the game just not exciting? I can't say for sure. The game deserves a good score, and I'll give it one; but at no time did I ever think, "Hey, I should put down (insert big name title here) and play C.O.P.!" Never happened. Maybe I'll come back in February and see if I can rekindle the spark that I know must be in there somewhere.

3D Juegos (Nov 05, 2009)

GameZone (Nov 16, 2009)
An exciting, albeit clunky, driving/action game born out of GTA inspiration, C.O.P. The Recruit pushes the limits of the Nintendo DS.

Meristation (Nov 06, 2009)
¿Fallos?

Although plagued by balance and control issues, COP the Recruit is ambitious in its depth and groundbreaking in its technology. The easily frustrated might want to skip this game, but for experienced gamers looking for a challenge, COP offers a lengthy experience and hardcore difficulty.

C.O.P.: The Recruit puts New York City in the palms of gamers' hands, asking them to keep the streets safe by accomplishing a variety of tasks. That's pretty impressive on a technical level, especially considering the ground-level view, lack of load times, and mostly smooth performance. However, while the developers succeeded in stealing Rockstar's basic idea and putting it on a handheld with a few tweaks, they failed in capturing the panache of Grand Theft Auto. Many of the missions here are fun to play, and one can easily spend a few days working through the missions and exploring New York, so this isn't a terrible buy. Just don't expect much more than a me-too experience.

It is a nice change of pace to play the good guy once in awhile. COP is a technical masterpiece on the DS and shows off that the handheld still has many surprises beyond creative control schemes. There is a lot of combat and, overall, COP is good, it just lacks some of the elements that pull you deeper into the world.

GamePro (US) (Nov 03, 2009)
In the end, this game does feel sort of like a poor man's version of GTA, yet to even compare a DS game to that storied franchise can be seen as an accomplishment, and it does make an earnest attempt to differentiate itself by adding a few distinctive qualities. So if you thought GTA was good but needed a lot more stylus controls, then Officer Dan Miles is ready to drive down New York City's sidewalks with you, injuring no one.

Nintendo Life (Nov 23, 2009)
It has a few design flaws that detract from the gameplay, particularly in terms of simple usability, and to tell the truth there’s not really a huge amount of originality on display. If you’ve played any open world GTA off-shoot in the past ten years you’ll find little in C.O.P. to surprise you, but if you’re after a less-adult title in the genre then C.O.P. The Recruit comes highly recommended.

Everyeye.it (Nov 21, 2009)

C.O.P's a bit like buying a mansion and only living in one room. It's one of the most visually impressive games we've ever played on the DS but the gameplay never quite manages to match up to the graphics, and while you'll undoubtedly have some fun playing it there's no motivation to explore the city and do your own thing, which is what makes GTA so fun. A shame.

Modojo (Nov 11, 2009)
If you're looking for a somewhat fun action, you could do worse than C.O.P the Recruit. The shooting controls needed work, and it would've been nice to have a multiplayer mode, but this is one police story worth listening to.

Eurogamer.it (Nov 17, 2009)

NintendoWorldReport (Nov 24, 2009)
The core problem with C.O.P. is that it is unfinished. The “dramatic” story is comical: there is a large cast of characters that I don't know anything about nor do I care to, and the plot is confounding and hard to follow. The gameplay is unpolished: driving isn't fun and gunplay is defective. The sound is just not good. The game's shining moment is the engine, which is seemingly where most of VD-Dev's efforts were spent. C.O.P. is a forgettable title that had the extreme misfortune of coming out the same year as the vastly superior Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars.

Worth Playing (Jan 06, 2010)
That's why it's a shame that C.O.P.: The Recruit fails in just about every other area. The gameplay is uninspired and a complete rip-off of the mission formula in Grand Theft Auto titles, but it lacks the series' interesting dialogue, story and characters. Without that, just going through a string of missions that are loosely tied together by a lackluster plot isn't anyone's definition of fun, but that's all you're going to get. Likewise, while the controls work, the driving controls have some pretty serious issues that could have used some work since so much of the game relies on driving. The lackluster vehicle segments really hindered the overall experience. If you were hoping to get a decent GTA clone out of C.O.P., prepare to be disappointed. It's a pretty big letdown from the action-packed trailer that was shown at last year's E3, and it certainly doesn't deserve a second glance from most DS owners.

GamingXP (Nov 14, 2009)
Schade drum!

Game Shark (Nov 13, 2009)
From a technical standpoint, C.O.P.:The Recruit is very impressive and tech-heads may find it worth checking out if only to see how smoothly it runs with such a large environment at play. There's also plenty of missions meaning that your time spent in the game will be on the higher side, however the headaches that come with navigating Dan Miles through his career as a police officer will undoubtedly drive off all but the most devoted sandbox genre junkies.

Gamer.nl (Nov 11, 2009)

IGN (Dec 02, 2009)
I wanted to like C.O.P., but there simply wasn’t enough effort put into localizing it and giving the characters some personality. Everything is as flat and lifeless as those streets that come pouring past your zippy little cars at 60fps. Is the game worth a look? Oh, absolutely, but understand that once you’ve seen what the competition has to offer, a look’s about all C.O.P. is good for.

InsideGamer (Dec 07, 2009)
Volgende keer beter.

videogamer.com (Nov 30, 2009)
C.O.P. The Recruit makes you appreciate, if indeed it further needed your appreciation, the true worth of Chinatown Wars. It single-handedly validates Rockstar's decision to return to GTA's top down roots for its latest handheld release. No-one can doubt that Ubisoft's effort is a superb technical accomplishment, but games need more than that. They need soul, fun, life and personality - qualities Chinatown Wars has in spades, and that C.O.P. The Recruit is devoid of entirely.

It’s not totally broken, but those that wish to "Starsky and Hutch" it up on the cheap will enjoy it on that merit as they pick it up amongst the unwanted "Petz" and licensed movie tie-in games, the rest of us are going for a life of crime. It’s much more interesting.

If imitation is indeed a form of flattery, then poor imitation is perhaps tantamount to an insult. C.O.P. is a sloppy game which fails to exploit its impressive technological base, and clunky controls, laughable presentation and uninspired design conspire to render C.O.P. a game which misses the mark by quite a margin and errs in every way that Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars succeeds. It may be worthy of a rent to get a rare glimpse of the underutilized power of the Nintendo DS, but otherwise, C.O.P. is a forgettable copycat title on a system spoiled with superior choices.

Multiplayer.it (Nov 26, 2009)

Game Informer Magazine (Nov 19, 2009)
Every ambitious idea in C.O.P. is countered by a lazy compromise, right down to the unnecessarily acronymized title (which is never explained in a satisfactory way in the game). The game offers oodles of content for anyone willing to put up with the sub-par execution, but if you’ve ever played a Grand Theft Auto game or have reasonable standards for gameplay and storytelling, there’s no reason to waste your time on C.O.P.

Eurogamer.net (UK) (Nov 24, 2009)
For all its swagger you can't run people over - they all miraculously dive out the way. There's not a speck of blood anywhere, and the innocents just absorb your bullets without reacting. You're not stealing cars in the street - you're taking them because you're a cop. And at one point someone said to "frag off". Of course, none of those things are necessary for something to be enjoyable, and none make it a poor game, just one afraid to be itself - it wants to be a bad boy, but without being bad. What does make it a poor game is the crappy driving, ridiculous shooting, cackhanded interface and nonsense story. COP would get its head kicked in by GTA, before it cried home to its mum. It's essentially not cool.

Teletext (2009)
Unfortunately the problems just mount up from there with a terrible story and dialogue (appallingly translated from the original French) and no quick restarts for failed missions. There's also the difficultly curve that oscillates up and down like a seismograph on a water bed. This is a tech demo and a very impressive one at that. It just needed someone else to mould a game out of it.
25
Game Revolution (Nov 20, 2009)
What makes COP: The Recruit a lackluster game is that it comes late to the party. If this game came out 10 years ago on the Nintendo 64 and before high expectations were set for gritty crime games, then maybe it could’ve been a decent game, possibly even a good game. But with open-city action titles like Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars, this game just can’t compare.

Since you finished this review I will reiterate my main point again, as you seem to have missed it or you would have stopped reading long ago. This game is not worth playing. Go play outside instead.
