None of these complaints derail me from one underlying fact: Darkest Dungeon is a superb game and is well suited for the iPad. It’s the kind of game you can drop almost any amount of time into and have fun. I’ve played both quick, twenty-minute spurts to tackle a single quest as well as some hours-long play sessions where I settled into the couch to really dig in and make some progress. Combat is fun and challenging and rewards good planning—picking the right mix of characters to go in—as well as good turn-by-turn decision making. The ability to upgrade and improve your town as you go adds a nice sense of permanence to what is otherwise a constantly shifting mix of characters. The bottom line is that if you enjoy role-playing games centered on smart, tactical combat Darkest Dungeon is a must-buy.

Το permadeath των ηρώων επιβάλει στον παίκτη σωστό στρατηγικό σχεδιασμό για να πετύχει, διαφορετικά θα χαθεί σε ένα αέναο grind με ήρωες μικρού level. Άλλωστε το παιχνίδι δεν χαρίζεται σε κανέναν, και ένα στραβοπάτημα μπορεί να αποβεί μοιραίο. Αυτό όμως δεν οδηγεί σε καταστάσεις όπου ο παίκτης θα τα παρατήσει λόγω permadeath. Ο τίτλος είναι δύσκολος (κατά πολύ ευκολότερος από ότι όταν ήταν σε κατάσταση Early Access), αλλά είναι και ισορροπημένος, και πάνω από όλα εθιστικότατος. Προϊόν δημιουργικής ευφυίας, με μεράκι πίσω από το οποίο κρύβεται επιμονή, χαρακτηριστικά που περιγράφουν απόλυτα τους Καναδούς στη Red Hook Studios. Κάντε στον εαυτό σας τη χάρη και αγοράστε το. Darkest Dungeon הוא אחד מהמשחקים היותר חשוכים ואפלים על הקונסולה וזה דבר נהדר - האווירה המדכאת, הסביבה העוינת, הגיבורים האנושיים מאוד שלנו, הבעיות המאוד מציאותיות והמשחקיות הנהדרת גורמים למשחק הזה לבלוט אפילו יותר על ה-Nintendo Switch. כבר אמרתי בעבר שהקונסולה הזו יצאה מהשבלונה המוכרת של ה-Wii וה-WiiU והיא כבר מזמן לא מיועדת בעיקר למשפחות וילדים אלא למבוגרים צעירים ומשחק כמו Darkest Dungeon על ה-Switch רק מחזק את הטענה הזו יותר. שחקני Switch - אם אתם חובבי Roguelike, RPG ומשחקים עם עלילה חשוכה ואפלה, יש לי את המשחק בשבילכם.

The only significant difference to Darkest Dungeon on the PlayStation 4 (which comes with both cross-buy and cross-save for the Vita version enabled) is that the controls take some getting used to. For instance, in order to navigate the inventory you have to hold L1 and use the right stick; holding R1 instead and using the stick goes into the character status screens. It feels like a control layout that, once I’ve internalized it, would let me access everything quickly and easily – but there’s going to be a lot of learning involved before I get to that point. Until then, clicking the left side of the touchpad brings up the controls list when I forget which button does what. That quick-access cheat sheet seems to suggest I’m not the only person struggling to get a grip on them.

The Switch version of Darkest Dungeon plays very similarly to the other console versions, but when played in handheld mode its larger screen (compared to the Vita) makes it much easier to read the small text. Mixing the Joy-con controls with its excellent touchscreen control (a carryover from the iPad port) is a great way to sidestep the awkwardness of navigating menus, which means it's even easier to play that way than when docked.

The Vita version of Darkest Dungeon contains all the same content as the PlayStation 4 version, and it handles the many gameplay layers admirably. Like its console counterpart though, its controls are a bit fiddly. Basic functions of combat and movement are easy to grasp, but getting into the guts of the many menus to find specific pieces of information (and Darkest Dungeon has plenty of nuances to explore) takes some getting used to. Especially if you are the kind of person who obsesses over stats, gear, and resistance numbers, the Vita version can be a bit difficult to parse at times.

Darkest Dungeon is a grim and merciless tactical strategy game whose great tension comes from its many layers of complexity, unpredictable randomization, and willingness to put our fragile characters in mortal danger if we dare to venture into its depths in search of treasure and glory. Brilliant narration and stiff yet surprisingly expressive animation make it easy to be drawn into its vague but tantalizing world, though the end feels artificially out of reach.

Non era facile condensare nei pochissimi tasti di un pad (o di una portatile) un'esperienza di gioco nata appositamente per essere goduta con l'accoppiata mouse e tastiera. Se la versione maggiore non ha dato alcun problema sotto questo punto di vista, diverso discorso deve esser fatto per la piccola di casa Sony in cui la mappatura dei comandi, pur pensata con un certo criterio, finisce con esser poco intuitiva e un tantino farraginosa. Per questo motivo - e solo per questo - vi consigliamo di sottrarre mezzo punto dalla votazione in calce. Darkest Dungeon, comunque, rimane un acquisto assolutamente consigliato senza se e senza ma. Il binomio Cross buy/cross save e la sottotitolazione in lingua italiana, poi, completa un'offerta ludica imperdibile. Se non lo recuperate, prima o poi, vi meritate di trascorrere una nottata tra gli orrori del Dedalo.

Cattivo, spietato e dannatamente difficile, Darkest Dungeon è davvero il più oscuro dei sotterranei in cui vi capiterà di metter piede per un bel po'. Sicuramente un titolo non adatto a tutti, certamente sconsigliato a chi sviluppa empatia coi propri avatar o non ha intenzione di metter mano ad un sistema gestionale incredibilmente intricato e complesso, il lavoro di Red Hook Studios è la svolta che ci voleva nell'universo dei dungeon crawlers 2D, e probabilmente uno dei migliori progetti emersi finora dal carnaio di Kickstarter. Da approcciare con la giusta lucidità, e con la consapevolezza di perderla.

To say Darkest Dungeon is a challenging and satisfying RPG doesn't seem like nearly enough praise. The sheer amount of customization — 15+ different classes, seven abilities per character to choose from, equippable trinkets, and much more besides — makes for a highly involved, appetizingly deep adventure that can be approached with many different play styles. The psychological and stress aspects add something unique that is not seen every day. All the while, the roar of the excellent narrator commentates the success and failures of the player as they progress through intricately hand-drawn environments and battles with sound design tailored to perfection. The handling of the game on console feels a little off since the title originated from PC, but don't miss out on Darkest Dungeon's incredible experience just for that reason.

Mal abgesehen davon, dass ein Sprecher noch nie so stimmungsvoll ein Spiel kommentiert hat wie Wayne June: Dieses Taktik-Rollenspiel hat ein klasse Artdesign, das düstere Fantasy und Horror à la Lovecraft vereint. Es zelebriert spannende Kämpfe, bietet Erkundungsreize, Charakterentwicklung und dazu etwas Management.

Es zelebriert spannende Kämpfe, bietet Erkundungsreize, Charakterentwicklung und dazu etwas Management. Auch wenn sich auf lange Sicht einiges an Dungeonstrukturen und Spielmechanik wiederholt: Das herausragende Merkmal ist das kreative Kampf- und Krankheitssystem inklusive Folgeschäden, das abseits der schnöden Lebenspunkleiste mit Stress und Ticks für eine ganz frische Spielerfahrung innerhalb dieses Genres sorgt.

Darkest Dungeon atrapa. En una época donde ya estamos acostumbrados a los juegos tan desafiantes, a los roguelike donde tenemos que empezar nuestras andanzas desde el principio, sorprende que un título recoja de aquí y de allá sus mecánicas y las mezcle con tanta personalidad. Como hemos comentado, no es un juego para todo el mundo, pero es precisamente eso lo que lo hace tan especial. Y aunque en algunos momentos pueda tornarse algo repetitivo, los acérrimos exploradores de mazmorras pasarán aquí semanas en la oscuridad más absoluta.

Darkest Dungeon zu spielen heißt für mich: Fingernägelkauen. Selten habe ich in rundenbasierten Kämpfen derart mitgefiebert. Das Erstlingswerk von Red Hook Studios ist eines der Spiele, bei denen ich instinktiv Angriffe mit extrakräftigem Mausklicken auslöse – in der Hoffnung, am anderen Ende kommt dann so auch mehr Schaden heraus. Dass die Kämpfe jederzeit kippen können, sorgt für eine ganz besondere Spannung. (...) Dass eine nennenswerte Handlung fehlt, stört dabei nicht. Die Expeditionen ins Ungewisse sind mir Motivation genug. Wem das nicht reicht, der wird aber wohl schnell die Lust verlieren. Die Quest-Ziele wiederholen sich ebenso schnell wie die Dungeon-Hintergründe. Obendrein dürfte das Interface an einigen Stellen gerne deutlich hilfreicher sein.

Darkest Dungeon gelingt ein ähnlicher Geniestreich wie Dark Souls: Es macht die Siege so schwer, dass jeder erfolgreiche Schritt zum Freudenerlebnis wird, und es wirft Genrekonventionen über Bord. Hier zu gewinnen, ist der pure Nervenkitzel - extremer als in vielen aktuellen Rollenspielen. Meine Helden sind nichts wert, bis sie sich nicht bewährt haben. Ja, die meisten Anfangscharaktere sterben sogar. Meine Helden sind auch keine Strahlemänner, sondern werden durch den Abstieg in die Hölle langsam verrückt, entwickeln manische Zwänge und landen am Ende in der Klapsmühle oder Arbeitslosigkeit, weil sie schlicht unbrauchbar werden. Eigentlich dürfte Darkest Dungeon keinen Spaß machen, aber ich kann nicht aufhören, es zu spielen. Die faszinierende Sogwirkung entsteht aus der grandiosen Atmosphäre, aber auch aus dem Versprechen, dass der nächste Sieg ja eigentlich hinter der nächsten Ecke auf mich wartet. Ich muss nur noch diese zwei Räume durchqueren.

The narratives of Darkest Dungeon cannot, by their nature, be so dynamic. Possibilities are not infinite; they remain bound to the system of the game in the way that human decisions in a tabletop session are boundless. But I am so genuinely impressed with how Darkest Dungeon appeals to both my tactical and psychological inclinations that I can easily overlook the moments when the illusion breaks down and the system feels predictable again. I have no reason to believe that the designers at Red Hook Studios had any intention for me to measure their game against a tabletop giant like D&D, rather than other role-playing videogames. The fact that this seemed like the only apt comparison speaks to the ingenuity and, above all, appreciation of human weirdness that Darkest Dungeon offers.

Darkest Dungeon is difficult, but not because its systems are unclear or unfair. In fact, the richness and complexity of its mechanics are miraculously transparent. What makes Darkest Dungeon challenging is balancing and equipping a party and the essentially unpredictable nature of the dungeons and combat. The art style — hand-drawn and evocative, with just enough effective animation to keep things interesting without adding overwhelm to the already busy nature of the action — is beautiful, and its music and stentorian narration are perfectly in sync with the characters. The whole enterprise is polished and a lot of fun.

Despite the grind, despite the perhaps undue commitment to brutality, and despite what I feel is a joke at the player's expense at the end, Darkest Dungeon still manages to be one of the most engaging and intriguing roguelikes I've ever played and I'll probably still be diving dungeons and trying new party compositions weeks from now. After all, it would be madness to stop at this point.

Despite gameplay better suited for a mouse and keyboard, Darkest Dungeon transitions rather well from PC to Switch. The controls were always going to be convoluted when adapted to a controller, but it doesn't take too long to adjust, and the core gameplay loop is strong enough where overlooking that initial awkwardness is more than doable. The sheer challenge of the title will certainly overwhelm some, but there a plenty of workarounds between Radiant mode and the ability to toggle certain difficulty features off. The atmosphere, aesthetic, and music all lend themselves to an incredibly tense experience where every battle matters and constant management is necessary for survival. Darkest Dungeon is by no means for everyone, but that doesn't mean it isn't worth the stress.

I’m not the biggest fan of games that punish you for the smallest mistake, but in spite of that, I really enjoyed my time with Darkest Dungeon. The game rarely feels unfair, and proper preparations and knowledge of what you’re getting into will generally get you through to the end safely. While the loop of entering dungeons and slowly building up resources and character levels might seem repetitive on paper, it’s really more addicting, as you eventually gain parties strong enough to defeat bosses and delve into the Darkest Dungeon itself. Its addition to the Switch library is a great boon, and I highly recommend it there—however, this difficult RPG is worth the price of admission on any platform.

Darkest Dungeon has found itself high up in my games of the year list, and I’ll be playing it for a long time to come. An ungodly combination of Fire Emblem and Dark Souls, it delights in making you suffer, but every small step forwards feels like a massive achievement. It’s not for everyone, but if you enjoy the darkness and feel up to the challenge, you can’t do much better than enter the Darkest Dungeon. Just make sure that all your affairs are in order and that you have written a will, because once you’re in, you might not make it back out…

There's something I can't say for most games: The times when I most felt that I had irrevocably fucked up were also the times when the game was at its strongest. Though some of Darkest Dungeon's more annoying design concessions detract from the overall experience, I'd be foolish not to recommend such a singular experience. There's always a strand of hope, however slender, to pull yourself out of the darkness, and it's worth fighting through it.

Darkest Dungeon’s interesting use of stress as a primary mechanic and the permanent death of your heroes creates a uniquely satisfying risk and reward.

If you played and liked Darkest Dungeon on PC, picking up the tablet edition is a no-brainer. For five bucks, you can take your dungeon-crawling on-the-go, and even continue adventures you've started on the PC by exporting your save file via Dropbox. That said, Darkest Dungeon certainly isn't for everyone. It feels like a game that wants to beat you down by throwing its systems at you. This can be fun to a point, but it also makes the game feel pretty oppressive and downright random. Considering the game is about fighting off eldritch horrors, this makes a certain amount of sense, but it also makes for a less fun game experience.

Deux ans après sa sortie PC, l'impitoyable Darkest Dungeon arrive enfin sur une console Nintendo. La bonne nouvelle, c'est que le portage est bien plus propre que ceux des versions PlayStation à leur sortie, même si les patchs successifs ont permis d'améliorer l'ergonomie et de corriger la majorité des soucis techniques du côté de Sony. On se retrouve donc presque avec le meilleur des deux mondes, à savoir un jeu fluide, sans accrocs sonores pendant les quelques heures passées dessus et agréable à jouer en mode nomade grâce à la taille de l'écran qui permet d'avoir des textes plus lisibles que sur Vita. Il faut quand même un temps d'adaptation pour avoir toutes les fonctionnalités des boutons en tête, notamment ceux qui ne sont pas affichés directement sur l'interface, en gardant à l'esprit que l'option tactile est également viable.

Jedinečné invenci krásně chmurné hry na hrdiny hází klacky pod nohy zásadní technické přešlapy. Ať už se jedná o ztrápené ovládání či dost rozpačité vyobrazení na dotykovém displeji, tabletová verze prostě rozčiluje jinak, než měli tvůrci v úmyslu.

Ну вот, пара вылазок — и можно будет снарядить нового крестоносца взамен убитого. Правда, сейчас для второго этажа нет «танка», поэтому придётся трижды сходить на первый. И ещё нужна монахиня — надо просто дождаться, когда дадут нанять новую. Может быть, в следующий раз. Или через раз. А дальше станет интересно — честно-честно!
