Demon's Crystals is a twin-stick shooter with levels set in small arenas. The player takes control of one of the four available Uricans (Adora, Anara, Dryad, Taur), female fantasy demons with horns and wings. They are on top of the food chain in their world, but one day astral demons arrive and turn the entire planet's population into aggressive beings. The main Arcade mode consists of three worlds with several levels each, where at the end the three bosses Ghoros, Ornak and Sarkon need to be defeated. Each world has a different setting and new types of enemies. There are also three difficulty levels.

Typical for the genre characters can freely move around in the environment and can fire in a direction independent from movement. The arenas are busy environments filled with obstacles and hazards, and often divided into smaller room with entrances and certain buildings that can be blown up. To complete a level, two or three missions need to be completed in succession in the same environment, carrying over health. A mission either requires the character to kill a number of enemies or collect a certain amount of crystals that every now and then. Sometimes stronger characters or a boss need to be defeated as well. The four Uricans have a different look and weapon, but the gameplay is largely the same.

By defeating enemies that spawn endless unless the objective is met, the Uricans earn experience and become stronger after leveling up. These levels are permanent and carried over across sessions. Tied to the character levels several demon power-ups spawn, providing new types of weapons for a short time, most often based on new types of bullet patterns. Other pick-ups are a shield, health, a companion, bullet time, winged boots for additional speed, a blue mushroom that turns the Urican into an invincible giant that crushes enemies, and runes that launch a powerful attack based on energy, fire or ice, killing almost everything on the screen. All levels have a time limit and sometimes there are pick-ups to add or subtract time, as well as confusing potions that reverse the controls.

The Arcade mode can be played cooperatively locally with up to four players. There is also a survival mode for one player for each of the three environments, when unlocked, with global leaderboards. Competitive local multiplayer is supported through several game modes: Deathmatch, Capture the Great Crystal, Crystal Attack, Crystal Quest (collect crystals against a time limit), Kill the enemies (kill as many enemies as possible, but watch out for gnomes that reset the score), and Survival (the same as the single-player mode, but the last player standing wins).
