Resolves Diablo 2's weaknesses, and adds some intriguing enhancements as well. For owners of the original game, this is a great add-on.

Whether you play Diablo II once a day or once a month, Lord of Destruction is a must-have. The ability to play in 800 x 600 resolution alone is worth the cost of admission. You must buy this expansion pack!

WindowsMana Pool (Apr 19, 2012)
Overall, if you missed this, you missed a classic that’s still well-worth playing. There are good imitators out there, like Torchlight or Titan Quest, that may have a modern edge on graphics. But this beats them on sheer variety, replayability and setting. It beats them into a Brilliant Cocked Hat of the Moon, using a Toxic Cudgel of the Leech. You can pick the original and the expansion up from Blizzard for a total of £20, which is a very fair price for a huge and wonderful game.

WindowsGamezilla (Jul 10, 2001)
It may cost a bundle at $30, but Diablo II: Lord of Destruction is worth the price. The expansion is so packed with new features, creatures, classes and items that you could mistake it for a new game. And with at least an additional 10 hours of play, the expansion is definitely worth the price. The best game of last year may feature the best expansion of this year.

WindowsDeaf Gamers (2001)
This expansion pack retains all the great text feedback and excellent interface of Diablo 2 and pads the game out rather nice with its extra features. Fans of Diablo 2 will love this expansion pack. Although the fifth act is rather short it is the other additions that make it a quality add-on. Think of it as expanding the width of the game rather than the length.

Some seemingly innocuous but certainly annoying activities have disappeared: the tedious buy-a-potion, place-the-potion, buy-a-potion, place-the-potion activity owes its demise to the ctrl-right-click purchase option. The click-repair, click-broken-time-one-at-a-time yawner was replaced a Repair All button. Add to these the new Assassin and Druid character classes (rounding the total number up to seven), and you have one heck of a versatile monster romp.

Faults? The 800x600 resolution is still a hit dated and the game chugs a little now and then. It’s pricey, too. But that’s about it. This expansion has taken a game that didn’t quite live up to sky-high expectations when it was released and made it one of the most satisfying gaming experiences I’ve had. I’ve played through the entire five acts with both a druid and assassin and I’m nearly done playing through them again with both characters in Nightmare mode. Now I can’t wait to go to Hell. And if LORD OF DESTRUCTION keeps getting me stared down at 5:30 a.m. by my wife, I may get there sooner than expected.

Despite the few drawbacks and the availability of newer alternatives, Diablo II is still just as popular as ever. In fact, Blizzard is planning a new patch sometime in mid-2008. Other patches had big impact on how the game was played. Will version 1.12 make the game better? Who knows, but what I do know is that Diablo II is so painfully addictive that it's nearly impossible not to put in an hour or six a day. This MMORPG classic gets a 9 out of 10 from my aching right index finger.

WindowsPeliplaneetta.net (Jul 09, 2001)
Koska Lord of Destruction on laajennusosa, eikä sitä voi pelata ilman alkuperäistä peliä, aiheutuu henkilöille jotka eivät alkuperäistä Diabloa omista lisäkustannuksia molempien pakettien hankkimisesta. Laajennuspaketti tuo paljon uudistuksia myös pinnalle näkymättömiin ominaisuuksiin, mutta pelaamista alkuperäiseen on lisää loppujen lopuksi melko vähän, eikä pari uutta hahmoakaan tuo peliin riittävästi uutta ja ihmeellistä. Kuitenkin jos internet-yhteydet antavat myöten kannattaa peliä kokeilla verkossa, sillä vasta moninpelinä pääsevät laajennuspaketin ominaisuudetkin vasta oikeuksiinsa. Monet uudistukset parantavat Diablo 2:n niin loistavaa pelattavuutta entisestään ja pelaamista kokonaisuutena kuitenkin riittää melkoisesti.

With all the new additions, keep in mind it's still Diablo II. Many of the same things that irritated gamers in the original are still there - namely, Battle.net still plays abysmally and unreliably, especially during peak hours, and the plot is still virtually nonexistent. However, if you enjoyed Diablo II, despite laggy play and no plot, go get yourself a copy of Lord of Destruction - the new act, classes, items and features are all worth $30.

WindowsPC Action (Jul 06, 2001)

WindowsIGN (Jul 06, 2001)
One of the more hostile moments in IGN PC's history has been Dan Adams's review of Diablo II -- primarily because he's the sort of guy that believes that games should regularly use more than one mouse button. So this time around to spare Dan the hatemail, the EIC asked a guy who actually liked Diablo II to review the expansion pack. So, as a fan and a critic, I have to say the Lord of Destruction is really good -- Blizzard really revised, tweaked, and added features that will make it a "must buy" for any fan, but there are some serious caveats (actually, only one big one) that you need to be aware of before diving straight in.

In Blizzard Entertainment’s Diablo II: Lord of Destruction players once again take up arms in order to do battle against the forces of evil and chaos. Does this expansion set live up to the rest of Blizzard’s top-notch titles or does it fall flat like so many Richard Gere films? C’mon folks, WAKE UP! Lord of Destruction is a Blizzard Entertainment title, of course it’s amazing. The only question is, just how amazing is this latest installment of the Diablo saga? Read on and all questions will be answered.

Diablo II: Lord of Destruction is to Diablo II what Brood War was to StarCraft. The changes are many and irreversible, but in general Blizzard is taking things in the right direction, and if you don't mind investing another $35 into Diablo II (you first need to admit the fact that you purchased items off of Ebay), LoD will be well worth it!

WindowsGry OnLine (Jun 30, 2001)

WindowsGameSpy (2001)
If you're a diehard Diablo II player, you either have LoD already, you can't afford it yet, or you've complained loudly that Blizzard is effectively forcing players to "upgrade" by releasing changes you've asked for within the expansion pack. However, LoD is easily worth the money a Diablo II player will put into it, if not for the two new characters and new Act alone.

I have to say that even though I hate what Diablo Hack'n'Slash gameplay does to my mice (note: I said mice), this expansion and what it had to offer really got my attention. If you are an old Diablo fan, you probably already finished the expansion, and if you never even played Diablo II, well, now you can play a complete debugged game with seven available PC classes.

MacintoshAll Game Guide (2001)
While praise for the enhancements and new features is apt, perhaps this expansion pack should also be applauded for what it does not do. It does not require the player to learn new tricks or interface standards. It does not weaken any of the items, features, or abilities from the original for the sake of making its own additions more desirable. It is not disruptive to the storyline or plot of the original, nor does it disturb the balanced gameplay or multiplayer support. By gently correcting shortcomings and firmly reinforcing strengths, Diablo II: Lord of Destruction is an expansion package truly worthy of the best-selling original.

WindowsRPGFan (Sep 20, 2001)
I have to conclude that the expansion lives up to the expectations. Diablo 2: Lord Of Destruction will be a thrill whether you go solo or play with friends. Some bugs plague the game, but then again it's nothing serious. Besides, what PC game doesn't have bugs? That's what patches are for! This game is a definite must buy for those who already own the original Diablo II!

Should you buy this expansion? Yes, if you're a fan of Diablo 2. But then, a fan of Diablo 2 already has the game, and was salivating for it the moment it was potentially rumored to possibly be announced. You won't get the most out of the new equipment additions unless you're a committed online gamer, but even for those of us who just want more Diablo 2, it's a worthy addition.

WindowsAll Game Guide (Jun, 2001)
Diablo II: Lord of Destruction does that which an expansion pack should do. It adds features and options that enhance the game experience, but in generally indirect ways that are best appreciated by those who have already played through the original release.

The wide range of character classes to choose from, the forming and perpetual refining of each character, and the sheer breadth of customizing traits available all serve to solidify the replay value of this immense epic. The fact that maps differ when beginning a new game also adds to replay value.

WindowsAdrenaline Vault, The (AVault) (Aug 10, 2001)
Lord of Destruction is pure action. This is what fans of Diablo II want: pure monster-killing, item-dropping, fireball-chucking entertainment. The expansion doesn't offer a sophisticated plot, extensively scripted dialogue, or complicated puzzle solving. It only promises action, and delivers it in abundance. The millions of consumers who purchased and enjoyed Diablo II will find enhanced gameplay and replayability in the expansion. The increased difficulty ultimately weakens the single-player experience, but with great music, more territory and quests, additional monsters and items, and two new character classes, Lord of Destruction is worth the price of admission -- even more so because of the upgrades to Battle.net. Long after the marathon play sessions have ended, you may find the Lord of Destruction icon still sits on your desktop, and that you pop in the CD long enough to get "one more skill point."

WindowsGame Informer Magazine (Sep, 2001)
Is this enough to put me back on the trail of Deckard Cain again? Not really. Unless you haven't tired of multiplayer on Battle.net, all the new characters, skills, and items don't take away the been there, done that feeling. This is especially true if, like many, you've gone through the game a couple times already to try out different classes. Buy Lord of Destruction if you're exploring Diablo II for the first time. Skip it if you've already had your fill.

The original Diablo was my first PC gaming experience, so I have Blizzard to thank for opening me up to the world of PC gaming. It's a fantastic game filled with many fantasies to live and mysteries to unfold. I'd absolutely recommend Diablo II: Lord of Destruction to anyone who has played Diablo, another Blizzard game, or an action title with RPG elements. Even someone new to the world of gaming might enjoy it, though it would be wise to start at the beginning of the series. Otherwise, a new player might feel lost in the Lord of Destruction. It would be like skipping to the last few pages of a book and trying to understand why it ends in the way that it does. However, if you're in it for the pure hack and slash, dive on in. Please note that you do need Diablo II to install and play the expansion.

However, the lack of an on-demand save function is quite obnoxious. If you’re unlucky enough to get yourself killed, you’ll need to retrace your steps from the nearest town to get all of your equipment back. Bummer. Oh well, whaddya gonna do? Buy it anyway, of course.
