Much like how the original set the bar for licensed games, DuckTales: Remastered has set the bar for HD remakes. It’s an improvement over the original and blew away my expectations. DuckTales: Remastered is a fan service that lovers of the original game, the TV show, and platformer enthusiasts can appreciate. It’s short, but worth its weight in gold. It has all of the charm you would expect from the DuckTales namesake and is an experience that should be shared throughout the generations to come.

Basically, if you loved DuckTales as a kid, whether it was the NES game or the T.V. show, or both, you should definitely pick this up. And if you never got into the show or game, but have some affinity for retro games, you should still pick this up. It’s one of the best retro revival titles I’ve seen, with some loving detail given to both the look and sound of the game from the fine folks over at Wayforward. I sincerely hope that Capcom doesn’t stop here with their awesome licensed catalogue, and hope to see titles like DuckTales 2, Chip ‘n Dale Rescue Rangers, and Darkwing Duck in the near future. So support this game people, it really deserves it.

If you were a fan of the NES original, DuckTales: Remastered is the definition of a must-own title. The game faithfully recreates the NES original while sprucing up the visuals, modernizing the music quality and even adding a couple new levels. It’s the type of HD remake I’d love to see for other classics like Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers or any of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles arcade games. But if you’ve never been to Duckburg, you might want to try this one out before you part with your pennies. After all, isn’t that what Scrooge McDuck would do?

The mix of a retro feel with modern enhancements makes DuckTales Remastered the definitive version of the game. There are ways this game could have been made even better, but besides some minor complaints, this is still a high-quality experience. Whether you're a fan of the original or not, DuckTales Remastered is a blast from the present.

Being objective was tough for this one because the game was very good to begin with, and they just added made it beautiful and more like the cartoons than we could have ever hoped for. Yes it doesn’t have much of a story, and there is far too much sitting around and talking, but for heaven’s sake, it’s the original cast! They could say anything and I’d be happy. After the three hundredth time hearing Scrooge make the crack about the diamond being as big as Mrs. Beakley, you might start to reach for the mute button, but there has been more annoying things in life. I say this is another must-own if you satisfy the requirements above. It’s fan-service wrapped around an already great game. The only thing that would have made it better would have been to include the NES games as unlockables. How sweet would that have been?

DuckTales Remastered is a great call back to the glory days of platforming. For those that are just now hearing about these weird talking pantsless ducks, it’s a solid enough play that provides a few hours of enjoyment. For those of us who recall the cartoon and/or game fondly, this is a must buy that will be returned to many times over. I fall firmly into the later.

Ducktales Remastered is a nostalgia trip from start to end, frustrating, life-taking warts and all. There are mine cart levels, collectibles that ding when you pick them up, a bank vault full of money that exists for no reason other than to let you dive in. It’s clear that this was a project of care and love, with attention to detail ever-present - everything new is there to accentuate the old, and it results in a game that brings retro into the modern era with barely a hiccup.

Don’t let the cartoony graphics and Disney branding fool you. DuckTales: Remastered is a challenging platformer that’s absolutely brimming with charm. The campaign may be short and indicative of its source material, but it has been updated in a way that makes the experience feel fresh and guarantee that you’ll be back for more. Are you a fan of the original DuckTales game or the animated series? Download this game immediately. Have you never played, watched, or even heard of DuckTales? Download this game immediately, and then tell all of your friends to do the same. They’ll thank you for it later.

Bugs aside, this is a game that raises the bar for HD remakes of classics. There is a huge gallery of bonus art and music to buy with your collected treasure. The controls and physics are as tight as ever—purists can even select “Hard Pogo” mode for retro “Down-Y” NES controls. There's an unlockable option to play the game with the original 8-bit music—even the new tunes have 8-bit renditions to match the classic themes. It's truer to the source material than even the original game was, and everything feels just right. Should you buy this game? If you liked the original NES version, yes. If you also liked the DuckTales cartoon, double yes. Young'uns who never experienced either of those certainly won't be able to appreciate this remake as much, but it's still a prime example of a solid, fun platformer with some decent challenge to be had.

Wii UCubed3 (Aug 21, 2013)
Whilst not perfect, DuckTales: Remastered stays faithful to the NES original and its gameplay mechanics, with the exception of forced collectibles and prolonging levels with cut-scenes. Fans of the show will be pleased to know that Alan Young has reprised his role as Scrooge McDuck and he still does a fantastic job at it, despite being much older now. For fans of the classic that like the inclusion of full voice acting and don't mind exploring every inch of a level to gather items required to progress, definitely check this out. However, for those that didn't like the NES version of DuckTales and despise the unforgiving difficulty of retro titles, steer clear of this remaster.

There is nothing fundamentally wrong with this game, except for the fact that it steals away the nostalgic joy with which I remember the original DuckTales.

For NES fans, and especially those who love the original, I would say that you have to experience DuckTales Remastered for the joy of seeing something that you remember in such a wonderful new light, but I would be more hesitant to recommend it to those unfamiliar with the original, or 8-bit platform games in general - especially when you could potentially get less than two hours worth of entertainment from it before moving onto something else. I really, really, want to give DuckTales Remastered an 8 or higher as it is great fun, the music is euphoria for the ears and it's technically a better game than the original ever was, but the over-reliance on story, a few bad design choices and the short length of the game mean I have to be unsentimental and give it its deserved score.

Remastered does do a nice job of giving us lots of extras, with multiple difficulty levels, hardcore-baiting achievements, unlockable concept art, sketches, music, and more. Further options would have been nice – such as ways to facilitate continues so you don’t get booted back to the stage-select screen after losing all of your lives – but such is a fact of old-school gaming life. DuckTales: Remastered is tough, just like the game that inspired it. Don’t go in expecting anything else.

Wii UNintendo Master (Oct 16, 2013)

WindowsChip Power Play (Mar, 2013)

DuckTales Remastered is going to excite all those who played the original – if you fall into this category, you’ve probably grabbed it already anyway. But when you truly take a step back and look at it when judged against today’s crop of platformers, it leaves a lot to be desired.

As pricey as it is and as badly designed as it may be in terms of its unbalanced difficulty levels, DuckTales: Remastered is still a very playable and enjoyable old school platform game. Fans will no doubt have already snapped this one up as soon as it became available to download, but everyone else should be cautious, and this is one game that would certainly be a lot easier to recommend at a slightly cheaper price point.

Wii UHonestGamers (Sep 22, 2013)
Capcom and Disney clearly put a lot of resources into this remake, and the original game deserved it. Unfortunately, some of the changes strip away small pieces of the former magic. The new content is at times almost sufficient to make up for such deductions, but then there are issues with the control scheme and a final stage that quickly saps the game’s final moments of the joy they should have contained. Long-time fans will still find a lot here to love, but newcomers are likely to still wonder what we’ve all been raving about for so many years.
