BarneySplat's author ran a BBS himself, Dataline Rave!(610-544-8001 -- but don't call, defunct since '97) out of Swarthmore, PA, which garnered enormous amounts of caller activity driven by people eager to lay the smack down on the sinister purple dinosaur even at the cost of long distance fees (or, given the general bent of the userbase, more likely scammed LD calling cards).
