Chess Wars: A Medieval Fantasy is a chess game very similar to Battle Chess, but with full motion video cutscenes for each piece capture.
As in most chess programs, the player can change the board perspective and pieces between 2D and isometric 3D.
It comes with 8,000 openings and classic games with 60,000 historical moves from chess masters like Kasparov.

According to the webpage of the movie sequences' writer: "CHESS WARS: A Medieval Fantasy and Interactive Motion Picture written and directed by Paul W. Cooper. Art Data Interactive. Won, Best New Video Game, 1996.". It doesn't say who gave the award though. Also, the year listed conflicts with the year of publishing by WizardWorks (1998), though 1996 may be when writing and filming was done.
Cancelled 3DO release
There was a rumor of a 3DO release or port at one point (not surprising considering Art Data's other 3DO ports), but it was never released.
