Chess! was originally released as shareware under the name EdChess.

This game has the following features:
  • A command line parameter to play in monochrome
  • Different skill settings for the AI opponent
  • A board editing function so that the player can use the game to solve chess problems
  • A save/load function
  • The computer can optionally be allowed to reference a book of standard openings
The player can either play against the computer or watch the computer play itself.
