Hovertank One Trivia (DOS)
InnovationsThis is, essentially, id Software's very first 3-D FPS and is often credited with being among the first 3D DOS games (if not the first) - completed in May 1991. Texture mapping would come later, though. But, they did manage to include digital sound effects.
TechnologyAt the time, PC's were considered too slow to move quickly through the rendered levels, but John Carmack used a workaround called raycasting. Instead of drawing all graphics at once and consuming all the memory, thin vertical strip lines of graphics were drawn at the time, based on the player's POV. By combining this with the scaling of objects and elements based on the player's current position, as introduced in Wing Commander, a fast, realistic 3-D world could be built.
