Trivia

1001 Video Games

The PlayStation version of WipEout appears in the book 1001 Video Games You Must Play Before You Die by General Editor Tony Mott.

Ingame advertisements

As Lee Carus stated in Retro Gamer 35, the billboards with advertisements that can be seen on the game's tracks were originally put in place to hide circuit visibility issues. Later on they became integral to the look of the product but initially it was a technical design issue.

References to the game

A concept video for WipEout was featured in the movie Hackers, though it is never referenced by name.

Soundtrack

Buoyed by the success of the game, Sony released in 1995 a full-length CD album called "Wipeout - the Music". 12 tracks of digital audio, rare and extended mixes featuring artists - Chemical Brothers, New Order, Manic Street Preachers, Sunscream, Leftfield, the Prodigy, the Shamen and others. Boasting 140 average beats per minute (bpm).

Version differences

The standard 1995 US version contains only the tracks from CoLD SToRAGE. The 1997 platinum release featured three extra tracks from Leftfield, Orbital and The Chemical Brothers.

The Saturn version dropped the CoLD SToRAGE track Transvaal from its audio selection, but included three unique songs not available on any other soundtrack or PlayStation version. The tracks were Poison, Planet 9 and Brickbat. Occasionally miscredited to Orbital, Chemical Brothers, and Leftfield, these three tracks were actually created by Rob Lord and Mark Bandola, who are better known as "PC Music," the composers for most of the songs in Wipeout 64.
